About This Position

JOB SUMMARY:

Sagamok Anishnawbek Education Anishinaabe Aadziwin is seeking to two (2) individuals to fill the positions of G’Chitwaa Kwe / Shkaabewis. They are a key resource in providing cultural support to programming and will be responsible for working directly and indirectly with the Traditional Knowledge Keepers, Land-Based Resource Teacher, Anishinaabemowin Speakers and the Visiting Elders to help provide Anishinaabe Aadziwin programming to the students, families, staff and community.

Shkaabewis / G’Chitwaa Kwe will function within Sagamok Anishnawbek Education system and contribute to the accomplishment of the strategic priorities to integrate Anishinaabe Aadziwin.

POSITION DUTIES:


  • Assist Traditional Knowledge Keepers to facilitate a range of traditional ceremonies and teachings for student programming, staff training programming about cultural teachings, ceremonies, practices and ensuring protocols are understood and met.
  • Assist Land-based Resource teacher in delivering land-based programming.
  • Support culture camps, events and activities.
  • Teach and mentor students to learn about their cultural identity.
  • Ensure traditional medicines are gathered, prepared, identified and stored.
  • Lodge and ceremony preparations: cutting wood and hauling trees, building and maintaining Sacred Fire, collecting Grandfathers,
  • Traditional hunting and fishing
  • Maintain a calendar of cultural activities and ceremonies and manage all documentation and statistics for the submission of regular monthly reports to Traditional Knowledge Keeper

TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:


  • Be a good role model and mentor, knowledge and understanding of the Seven Grandfather Teachings
  • Respect for confidentiality involving students, families and fellow employees.
  • Flexibility in working program hours including evening and weekends.
  • Will often be working in outdoor settings, either within Sagamok First Nation or beyond.
  • Work in a variety of environmental and weather conditions and at various times of day or night, depending upon the programming requirements.




QUALIFICATIONS:

An equivalent combination of education and experience in Anishinaabe Aadziwin.

  • Knowledge of Anishinaabe Aadziwin teachings, ceremonies, practices and protocols – local knowledge is an asset
  • Minimum 2 years experience working with child, youth and family programming in First Nations communities and/or organizations
  • A College diploma in Indigenous studies or a similar field of study an asset
  • Knowledge of Sagamok Education Policy and/or demonstrated ability to learn and adopt new policies quickly.


REQUIREMENTS:

  • Provide an acceptable Canadian Police Information Centre Check (CPIC) and Vulnerable Sector Screening (VSS).
  • Class G Ontario Driver’s Licence and have access to a vehicle
  • First Aid & CPR certified
  • $1M automobile insurance coverage
  • Certified Chainsaw Operator
  • Ability to understand and speak Anishinaabemowin is a definite asset
  • Well developed verbal and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to form effective working relationships
  • Excellent Time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Working knowledge in using computer systems and applications including Microsoft Office and the ability to adapt to new systems
