SUMMARY: The Lead Hand, Irrigation, is a key field leadership role responsible for supervising and guiding the irrigation crew while ensuring high-quality installation, maintenance, and repair of residential and commercial irrigation systems. This role supports landscape construction and seasonal operations, including snow and ice management in winter months, and ensures all work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with company standards and regulatory requirements. The Lead Hand serves as the Foreman’s on-site second-in-command, providing mentorship, coordination, and hands-on support to achieve operational excellence. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Crew Leadership & Field CoordinationSupport the Foreman as the on-site second-in-command, providing day-to-day direction to irrigation crew members.
Lead, motivate, and mentor team members to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality project execution.
Conduct daily pre-planning, task assignments, and workflow coordination to maintain productivity and meet timelines.
Monitor crew performance, provide hands-on training, and reinforce company standards and expectations.
Model professionalism, accountability, and a positive, solutions-focused attitude on site.
Install residential and commercial irrigation systems, including mainlines, lateral lines, valves, controllers, and backflow assemblies.
Perform system startups, winterizations, troubleshooting, and repairs.
Conduct system inspections, identify deficiencies, and implement corrective actions.
Adjust and program controllers to optimize water efficiency and performance.
Ensure all irrigation work complies with manufacturer specifications, municipal requirements, and provincial regulations.
Assist with landscape construction and softscape installation when required, including:
Sod, tree, and shrub installation
Mulch and rock placement
Basic hardscape support (patios, walkways, retaining walls)
Support snow removal operations during winter months, including:
Operating equipment for snow clearing
Hand shoveling and application of salt/sand
Safely operate trucks, trailers, skid steers, trenchers, vibratory plows, and irrigation-specific equipment.
Use hand and power tools required for irrigation and landscape installation.
Conduct daily equipment inspections and report maintenance needs.Ensure all work is performed in compliance with company safety policies and applicable occupational health and safety legislation.
Maintain strong working knowledge of relevant local and provincial codes applicable to irrigation and landscape construction.
From November through April, Park Landscaping shifts focus to snow and ice management, with the role adapted to support winter operations. Availability is required for weather-dependent scheduling, including evenings and weekends during peak snow events.
QUALIFICATIONS:Experience: Minimum experience in landscaping, including installation and maintenance of landscaping features to safety and quality standards.
Supervisory experience, including ability to delegate work, manage performance, and mentor staff.
Experience reading and interpreting blueprints and site plans is considered an asset.
Budget management experience considered an asset
Education / Certification: Post-secondary education in management, communication, safety, first aid, equipment operation, or landscaping considered an asset.
Alberta Class 5 Driver’s License with clean abstract.
Regulatory Knowledge: Thorough knowledge of landscape construction methods, materials, tools, and equipment.
Knowledge of occupational health and safety practices applicable to landscaping and irrigation operations.
Understanding of local, provincial, and federal regulations relevant to landscape and irrigation work.
Systems & Technical Experience: Skilled in operating skid steers, hand tools, and power tools safely and efficiently.
Experience using software for job management, costing, and safety compliance (e.g., Aspire, Site Docs).
Strong leadership skills: foster collaboration, teamwork, and a positive, results-driven work environment.
Relationship management: resolve issues and conflicts effectively, inclusively, and transparently.
Organizational and time management skills: ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines.

Attention to detail: accurate record-keeping and timely reporting.

Approximately 70% of work involves physical tasks such as walking, lifting, bending, and repetitive movements; 30% involves sedentary tasks like equipment operation, driving, and planning.
Ability to perform manual labour in outdoor settings and handle high-paced, physically demanding, or stressful conditions.
Frequent use of hands and fingers for dexterity, electronic recordkeeping, and communication; regular talking and hearing required.
Work is performed outdoors in a variety of conditions, including sun, heat, cold, wind, and rain, with exposure to dirt, dust, and noise.
