About This Position

  • GENERAL SUMMARY
    • The Dental Assistant provides direct patient care, in a dual role, with the scope of service being both dental office and dental surgery. Reports to department leadership.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
    • Provides assistance within the division for a variety of dental and OMFS procedures.
    • Assists in the outpatient clinic and operating room settings.
    • Obtains patient’s medical history and takes vital signs such as blood pressure and pulse.
    • Helps patients feel comfortable before, during and after treatment.
    • Provides patient education regarding treatments and post op care.
    • Develops and processes dental radiographs (x-rays), under supervision of licensed provider.
    • Obtains digital intra-oral impressions and when necessary, alginates impressions under supervision of licensed provider.
    • Prepares and sterilizes instruments and equipment.
    • Performs full-mouth prophylaxis under supervision of Pediatric Dentist
    • Performs office management tasks and clerical duties as required (e.g., scheduling appointments, answering telephone calls, billing, and ordering supplies).
    • Performs all other duties as assigned.
  • LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS
    • Required Licenses and/or Certifications
      • Licensed as a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) or a Registered Dental Assistant in Extended Functions (RDAEF) or 2 years previous Dental Assistant experience required.
      • State of Virginia X-ray Certification or completion of Dental Radiation Safety Course accredited by CODA required.
      • Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification (DAANCE) is strongly encouraged at start of employment. If not currently DAANCE certified, must work towards taking and passing exam within the first two years of employment required.
      • CPR Training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
      • PALS training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire.
    • Preferred Licenses and/or Certifications
      • None preferred.
  • MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
    • Required Education and Experience
      • High school diploma or equivalent required.
      • Minimum 1-2 years of experience working as a Dental Assistant required (2 years previous Dental Assistant experience required in lieu of RDA or RDAEF).
    • Preferred Education and Experience
      • None preferred.
    • Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
      • Strong proficiency and technical aptitude in MS Office products, including Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Word.
      • Strong verbal communication skills to build appropriate rapport with patients/families and professional relationships with providers, team members, and internal/external customers.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS
    • Normal patient care environment with moderate exposure to noise, dust, temperature and the like. Frequent exposure to communicable disease and moderately adverse working conditions due to performance of certain patient care activities.
