This position is responsible for maintaining an orderly, clean, aseptic environment for the operating room and assists staff by performing a variety of tasks and functions that support the care of surgical patients. Performs technical duties that assist the anesthesiologist and nurse anesthetists in preparation for providing anesthesia services.
I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Prepares OR case cart set-up with surgical instruments, power equipment, implant systems and other supplies using physician preference cards. Stages case carts by the designated OR suite upon completion. Verifies all case carts have been accounted for and complete with the OR charge nurse.
2. Acts as the front-line liaison between the OR, Anesthesia staff, Materials Management and Central Sterile staff. Anticipates and resolves instrument and supply related problems.
3. Exercises excellent judgment in determining which problems should be quickly referred to the charge nurse, perioperative operations coordinator, or manager. Reports and removes malfunctioning equipment, tags immediately, and communicates with the charge nurse and perioperative operations coordinator.
4. Must be familiar with the location of all supplies (including anesthesia supplies), equipment, and instrumentation in the core and specialty carts throughout the department. Ensures these items are returned to the appropriate location after use.
5. Reviews surgery schedule and coordinates the priority reprocessing of surgical instrument trays and single items needed for efficient turn-over between cases.
6. Provides additional instruments, sutures, equipment, and supplies (not included in the preference card) to the OR as needed during surgical procedures as requested.
7. Assists with restocking, maintaining, and replacement of OR and anesthesia supplies and surgical instruments on a daily basis to ensure the availability during surgical procedures.
8. Ensures OR rooms turnover occurs directly following the procedure and is completed within 15 minutes according to the perioperative policy/procedure guidelines.
9. Monitors, tests, and documents OR equipment and anesthesia equipment according to the OR policy procedure.
10. Utilizes standard precautions and adheres to the principles of infection control in all aspects of the technician role related to room cleaning, turn-over, and decontamination of surgical instruments.
11. Decontaminates, assembles, and packages all instruments following established protocols and guidelines.
12. Cleans and sterilizes surgical instruments, anesthesia and reusable equipment according to OR policy/procedure as needed and applying knowledge of sterile technique.
13. Responds to critical and emergency situations in a calm, efficient manner following direction given by charge nurse or designee.
14. Assists with patient positioning and transfers bed/stretcher to OR table.
15. Initiates, completes documentation, and maintains medical records, physician orders, transcription, and departmental logs with accuracy in a timely manner

License/Certification/Education:
Required:
1. High School diploma or equivalent.
Preferred:
1. Successful completion of an accredited instrument technician program.
2. Instrument Technologist or Specialist Certification.
Experience/Skills:

1. Knowledge of medical terminology.
2. Knowledge of surgical equipment, instrumentation function, patient related supplies, and materials.
3. Thorough knowledge of the principles of aseptic and sterilization techniques.
4. Mechanical aptitude and the ability to break down moving parts, clean, reassemble, and problem solve incomplete and missing instrumentation.
5. Knowledge of computers and the ability to learn software applications.
6. Strong attention to detail.
7. Must be able to function effectively with frequent interruption and changing priorities.
8. Ability to read, write and speak clearly in English.
9. Prior experience in a patient care environment or sterile processing.
Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.
