As a Consultant, Professional Services, you will provide hands-on PostgreSQL expertise to enterprise customers through both in-person and virtual engagements. You will assess complex database environments, translate business and technical requirements into practical solutions, and guide customers through architecture, implementation, migration, and optimization initiatives. The role combines deep database engineering with customer consulting, requiring strong communication and problem-solving skills. You will work on high-availability environments, performance tuning, security, monitoring, backup, and large-scale database migrations. You will also collaborate with product engineering and commercial teams to influence product direction and support new business opportunities. This is a customer-facing role in a collaborative environment, with moderate travel and exposure to complex enterprise technology projects.

• Assess customers’ existing PostgreSQL deployments and associated database tools, identify improvement opportunities, and document recommended technical solutions.
• Gather and document enterprise-wide database requirements by working closely with technical and business stakeholders.
• Develop professional services proposals aligned with customer objectives, technical requirements, and desired outcomes.
• Design and implement PostgreSQL database architectures, including highly available configurations for large enterprise environments.
• Support customers with database troubleshooting, performance analysis, and optimization initiatives.
• Perform database migrations from platforms such as Oracle, SQL Server, and MySQL to PostgreSQL.
• Develop data migration strategies for large databases while taking customer downtime constraints into account.
• Help customers upgrade applications to newer PostgreSQL versions and configure applications to leverage new database capabilities.
• Evaluate customer security requirements and recommend appropriate database security solutions and configurations.
• Implement backup, recovery, upgrade, and patching strategies according to customer requirements and industry practices.
• Design and implement database monitoring solutions, including alerting and proactive performance monitoring.
• Provide technical guidance on developing custom PostgreSQL-based applications, leveraging knowledge of programming languages such as C/C++, PHP, Python, Java, or Ruby.
• Maintain clear and comprehensive documentation, including technical runbooks and customer communications throughout projects.
• Collaborate with product engineering teams to provide customer feedback and contribute to future product direction.
• Support sales and sales engineering teams by providing technical input for new business opportunities.
• Work effectively across multiple projects, customer environments, and geographically distributed teams.

• 10+ years of professional experience in database consulting or a similar professional services environment, with a strong foundation in database technologies.
• 6+ years of hands-on experience working with PostgreSQL and Oracle databases.
• Extensive experience implementing PostgreSQL for high availability in large enterprise environments.
• Strong knowledge of database architecture, design, and application development across PostgreSQL, Oracle, or comparable database platforms.
• Advanced Linux system administration and performance-tuning experience across environments such as Ubuntu, CentOS, Red Hat, or Debian.
• Strong troubleshooting and scripting capabilities in Linux environments.
• Solid knowledge of SQL and Microsoft Windows environments.
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to diagnose complex database and performance issues.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly in customer-facing and consulting situations.
• Strong time-management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• Willingness and ability to travel approximately 30–40% depending on customer and project requirements.

Additional experience that would be valuable:

• Proficiency with PostgreSQL community editions and enterprise PostgreSQL distributions.
• Experience with PostgreSQL administration and related enterprise database tools.
• Expertise in PostgreSQL performance tuning and tools such as PgBadger, PEM, and BARMAN.
• Experience with PostgreSQL replication technologies, including Streaming, Logical, and Bidirectional replication.
• Strong understanding of PostgreSQL architecture, networking, HBA configuration, and connection pooling technologies such as PgBouncer and PgPool.
• Working knowledge of OLTP, DSS, and data warehouse system design.
• Experience with scripting languages such as Bash, KSH, Python, or Perl.
• Experience deploying and managing open-source software.
• Experience collaborating with virtual teams and working effectively from remote locations.
