Emergency Receiving Home – Child Support Worker

Job Summary

The Emergency Receiving Home Child Support Worker plays a crucial role in providing compassionate, trauma-informed care and support to children in crisis situations. Working within an emergency receiving home environment, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring the safety, well-being, and emotional support of children who are temporarily placed in the facility due to emergency circumstances. This position requires a combination of empathy, resilience, and practical skills to effectively address the needs of vulnerable children and provide them with a nurturing and stable environment during times of distress.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide direct care and supervision to children placed in the emergency receiving home, ensuring their safety, comfort, and well-being at all times.
  • Establish positive rapport and build trust with children, offering emotional support and reassurance in times of crisis or uncertainty.
  • Implement structured activities and routines to promote a sense of stability and normalcy for children in the emergency receiving home.
  • Incorporate Indigenous cultural practices and values into the care and daily activities of children, ensuring that their cultural identities are respected and nurtured during their stay.
  • Collaborate with social workers, case managers, and other professionals involved in the care of the children to develop and implement individualized care plans.
  • Monitor and document the behaviour, progress, and any significant incidents or observations related to the children under care.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe environment within the emergency receiving home, adhering to all relevant health and safety protocols.
  • Facilitate and supervise meals, recreational activities, and personal hygiene routines for children as needed.
  • Provide transportation for children to appointments, school, or other activities as required, utilizing a valid Class 5 driver's license.
  • Collaborate with external agencies, community resources, and families to support the successful transition and placement of children from the emergency receiving home to suitable long-term arrangements.
  • Participate in ongoing training, professional development opportunities, and team meetings to enhance skills and knowledge in the field of child welfare and crisis intervention.
  • Ability to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to ensure 24/7 coverage and support for children in crisis.
  • Work independently as well as part of a multidisciplinary team, demonstrating strong oral and written communication skills and interpersonal relations.
  • Possess knowledge of childhood growth and development, behavior, and community resources to effectively support children in crisis.
  • Interact positively with children on emotional, recreational, social, and cultural bases, fostering a safe and supportive environment.
  • Demonstrate reliability and responsibility in providing a safe and helpful environment for children.
  • Effectively communicate and manage emergency situations as they arise, ensuring the safety and well-being of children and staff.
  • Maintain daily reporting requirements and ensure adherence to the NWFC (North West Friendship Centre) and residents' operation and program manual.
  • Ensure the 24-hour homes, buildings, and vehicles are maintained to code as outlined in policies, procedures, and manuals.
  • Perform various duties as assigned by supervisor.

    • Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; post-secondary education in a related field (e.g., social work, child and youth care) preferred.
  • Previous experience working with children and families in crisis or vulnerable situations is highly desirable.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license; ability to provide transportation for children as needed.
  • Current (within 6 months) criminal record check with a vulnerable sector check required.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR is required to ensure the safety and well-being of children in care.
  • Certification in food safety is required for handling and preparing meals or snacks for children according to established health and safety standards.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, empathy, and the ability to establish trusting relationships with children and families from diverse backgrounds.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively collaborate with colleagues and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of childhood growth and development, behavior, and community resources.
  • Ability to work shifts, independently, and as part of a team in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Physical stamina and ability to lift and carry small children as required.

  • Capacity for empathy and understanding towards children experiencing trauma or distress.
  • Critical thinking skills to assess situations and make appropriate decisions in the best interest of the children under care.

  • Regular lifting and carrying of small children.
  • Standing, walking, and moving around the facility for extended periods.

  • Work is primarily conducted within an emergency receiving home environment, which may involve exposure to various challenging situations and behaviors.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to ensure 24/7 coverage and support for children in crisis.
