JOB SUMMARY:
The Farm Mechanic is responsible for maintaining, diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on equipment used in sod production and general farm operations. This position ensures that tractors, harvesting equipment, mowers, irrigation systems, trucks, trailers, and support equipment remain in safe, reliable operating condition to minimize downtime and support daily production.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain farm equipment used in sod production.
- Perform preventative maintenance on tractors, sod harvesters, mowers, utility vehicles, trucks, trailers, forklifts, and other agricultural equipment.
- Troubleshoot and repair diesel and gasoline engines, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, brakes, steering, PTO systems, and drivetrains.
- Repair and maintain irrigation pumps, valves, piping, reels, and related irrigation equipment.
- Respond to equipment breakdowns in the field and complete repairs to minimize production delays.
- Perform welding, fabrication, cutting, and metal repairs as needed.
- Replace worn or damaged components, including belts, bearings, hoses, tires, filters, and other mechanical parts.
- Maintain maintenance schedules and complete service records for equipment and vehicles.
- Assist in ordering repair parts, maintaining inventory, and organizing the shop.
- Keep the maintenance shop, service truck, and work areas clean, organized, and safe.
- Follow all company safety policies and procedures while using tools, equipment, and machinery.
- Assist with general farm maintenance and special projects as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILL & KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Three or more years of experience repairing agricultural, diesel, heavy equipment, or commercial landscaping equipment preferred.
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical systems, fuel systems, and mechanical troubleshooting.
- Welding and fabrication experience preferred.
- Experience maintaining irrigation equipment is highly desirable.
- Ability to safely operate farm equipment for testing and diagnostics.
- Valid driver's license required; CDL is a plus.
- Abides by all regulations, polices, work procedures and instructions.
- Attends safety training. Follows all safety rules and makes use of appropriate safety equipment.
- Participates and attends staff meetings.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Must be reachable 24/7 for emergencies.

- Strong mechanical aptitude and diagnostic skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize multiple repair requests.
- Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and equipment operators.
- Commitment to safety, quality workmanship, and preventative maintenance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Frequently lift up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds with assistance.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, and work underneath equipment.
- Ability to work outdoors in Florida heat, humidity, rain, and uneven terrain.
- Ability to safely use power tools, welding equipment, diagnostic equipment, and hand tools.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed in both shop and outdoor field environments. Employees are regularly exposed to machinery, moving equipment, dirt, dust, grease, fuel, chemicals, noise, and varying weather conditions. Overtime and weekend work may be required during peak harvesting and production periods.
