Part-Time Pharmacist

Description

General Duties

  • Reviews and verifies medication orders prior to administration when possible. Ensures appropriateness of use, correct dose, and route and monitors all possible interactions and incompatibilities. Contacts the provider or nursing staff as appropriate for questions or concerns about medication orders.
  • Performs necessary calculations to accurately prepare, and dispense medications. Prepares, dispenses and labels medications as indicated by law/statute.
  • Provides supervision of pharmacy technicians as required by law/statute, to ensure accuracy and efficient workflow.
  • Maintains accurate dispensing records, including controlled substance inventory. Investigates controlled substance discrepancies and reports all controlled substance losses to Pharmacy Manager.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of drugs in pharmacy, Omnicell Automated Dispensing Cabinets, carts and other floor stock areas.
  • Maintains a safe and clean pharmacy by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations. Protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control policies and protocols. When needed, prepares IV admixtures following aseptic technique and complies with USP 797 regulations and required competencies.
  • Adheres to departmental and hospital wide safety procedures and uses proper body mechanics while performing job duties. Completes annual mandatory training.
  • Reviews patient medications and counsels patients about indication, proper administration, side effects, and when to call provider.
  • Maintains practices to provide a safe medication use system. Investigates and reports medication errors and adverse drug reactions. Provides medication safety education to new pharmacy and nursing staff.
  • Maintains composure in emergency situations and is able to make sound decisions quickly. Accuracy is required; must have good communication skills and mathematical ability.
  • Participates in Pharmacy Staff and Clinical Pharmacist meetings, including providing learning topics as assigned.
  • Provides orientation and ongoing training for pharmacy staff and students. Acts as a resource to staff and other health professionals regarding medication therapy and clinical pharmacy services.
  • The Pharmacist must be able to work independently in an isolated area. Must be able to occasionally work irregular hours and be accessible to staff to provide on-site, telephone or electronic consultation.
  • Upgrades knowledge by participating in required continuing education and by participating in supplemental educational pursuits as personal and organizational needs dictate.

Performance Requirements/Expectations:

  • Knowledge of medical safety practices and standard requirements to evaluate existing standards and implement new procedures.
  • Skill in anticipating and reacting calmly to emergency situations.
  • Skill in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion and decision making.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize, organize and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to communicate clearly.
  • Understand the patient population and the specific needs of the community.
Requirements
  1. Currently licensed as Pharmacist by the MN Board of Pharmacy and in good standing.
  2. Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) through the American Heart Association or will be certified within six months of hire.
  3. Strong clinical, communication, and teamwork skills
  4. Availability for most Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays
