Organization: Museum of the American Military Family & Learning Center
Location:201 Eubank NE Ste3A, Albuquerque, NM 87123
An Off-Campus Work-Study Position -MUST have a Work-Study Award.
TheMuseum of the American Military Family & Learning Center (MAMF) is a small nationallyrecognized award-winning museum dedicated to preserving American militaryfamily history. MAMF is led by an all-volunteer board of directors and providesan excellent opportunity for a work-study student to get practical hands-onexperience in all aspects of Museum operations.
MAMFsspecial collections library consists of more than 2,200 volumes by and aboutmilitary personnel, military family members, and military events. Thecollections include first-hand oral and written histories, photos, anddocuments of family members from all service branches and federally-connectedcivil servants and educators, and artifacts dating from pre-AmericanRevolutionary War to present. Currentlyin transition, and mostly in boxes, the museum has relocated to Albuquerqueinto its WorkSpace. It needs to be unpacked and set up. For continuity, wewould like to employ a student who is willing to make a multi-semestercommitment.'
ArchiveManager Duties & Responsibilities
Qualifications:
Education: (Enrolled in B.S./B.A orM.S/M.A. in museum studies, history, library, education, or related field)
Professional, enthusiastic, andself-motivated
Dependable and Accountable
Excellent decision-making skillsand execution
Ability to work independently,sometimes without clear direction
Excellent communication (bothwritten and verbal) and interpersonal skills
Energetic, and outgoing
Ability to deal with people withdiverse viewpoints
Knowledge of preserving historicdocuments and artifacts
Proficiency in Microsoft OfficeSuite
Proficiency with cataloguingsoftware
Physical ability to climb stairs,bend, reach and lift to 30 pounds
BONUS: (but not mandatory) Have amilitary/military family connection
The ideal candidate will:
The Big Picture
Have the desire to work as part of team to grow a grassroots museum
Familiarize self with military/family culture and learn the back stories/significance of the artifacts
Seek opportunities to collaborate with other cultural, community, military-connected, and educational organizations to expand and diversify the museums audience, extend the museums reach, and advance its mission and interests
Participate in MAMF planning/initiatives
Keep current on best practices in the museum profession and apply them at MAMF
Operations
Be on-site when MAMF ideally 16 per week. Weekdays or weekends.
Interact with visitors and researchers
Follow MAMF policies and procedures
Work as a team with MAMF director, board members, volunteers and student Archive Assistants
Independent Tasks
Unpack and set up WorkSpace and Galley
Photograph and catalog artifacts into ehive online database
Organize, maintain and display artifacts
Write a quarterly article, other content for member newsletters
Create content for MAMF social media accounts
Accept and process donated artifacts
Provide guidance to student Archive Assistants
Shared Tasks
With Executive Director:
Meet weekly with and provideupdates and statistics as requested
Develop/establish artifact andlibrary collections policy/guidelines
With Volunteers/board members:
Engage and be helpful to visitors,board members, and small group
Perform minor cleaning (e.g.dusting, vacuuming, straightening/dusting artifacts)
With fellow students:
Be part of a student-directed team tounpack and set up the physical spaces
Work cooperatively with interns/servicelearning students who are scanning or doing other projects
Minimum Qualifications
Enrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM, Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.
