Operational Excellence Engineer – Manufacturing
Location: Petersburg, VA
Employment Type: Direct Hire
Compensation: Starting at $93,000+ (based on experience)
Position Overview
A manufacturing operation is seeking an Operational Excellence Engineer to support performance improvement initiatives across the plant. This role focuses on identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, reduce variability, and strengthen operational processes through data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement practices.
The position works closely with leadership and cross-functional teams to implement sustainable solutions and drive measurable results across production and support functions.
Key ResponsibilitiesPerformance Analysis & Improvement Initiatives
- Track and evaluate operational metrics to identify trends and improvement opportunities
- Support departments in establishing and achieving performance targets
- Lead improvement efforts focused on efficiency, waste reduction, and process consistency
Training & Continuous Improvement Support
- Facilitate training on improvement tools, methodologies, and best practices
- Coach team members on applying continuous improvement techniques in daily operations
- Participate in and support structured improvement events
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work with multiple departments on initiatives such as audits, 5S, failure analysis, and process standardization
- Identify recurring operational challenges and implement corrective actions
- Assist in the development and execution of annual improvement roadmaps
Project & Capital Support
- Support capital improvement (CAPEX) projects and related initiatives
- Develop and implement process standards tied to improvement efforts and capital investments
- Provide cost estimates and assist in evaluating project feasibility
Operational Support & Communication
- Provide guidance on process optimization and system enhancements
- Support internal communication, escalation processes, and follow-up actions
- Participate in safety initiatives and reinforce compliance with workplace safety standards
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business Administration, Material Science, or a related field preferred
- 3–5 years of experience in a manufacturing or industrial setting
- Familiarity with production workflows, process standardization, and quality improvement techniques
- Experience with tools such as Six Sigma, 5S, and failure analysis
- Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving ability
- Ability to train, coach, and influence team members
- Effective communication, presentation, and organizational skills
- Experience in steel manufacturing or heavy industrial environments
- Exposure to processes such as scrap handling, melting, casting, rolling, maintenance, or finishing
- Previous involvement in leadership, facilitation, or supervisory roles
- Understanding of complex engineering systems and business processes
