Description:

Wakefield Pork’s summer internship program is designed to give students a 360-degree view of pork-production. Interns receive the unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in all aspects of production including boar stud, farrowing, breeding, wean-to-finish, and office support. Our interns are an important part of the Wakefield Pork family and have opportunities to take part in leadership activities, company specific and Minnesota Pork Board events, and more!

Organizational Relationships:

  • Interacts closely with Sow Barn Managers, Department Leads, Technicians, Office Staff, Grow-Finish Field Representatives, and Internship Program Manager

Duration and Hours:

  • Summer - 12 weeks (beginning mid-May and ending mid-August)
  • Typically, Monday - Friday (about 40 hours/week)
  • Weekend shifts available as desired.
  • Weekly schedule is subject to change due to the fast-paced nature of our business

Pay:

  • Interns paid an hourly rate of $17 per hour
  • Housing is provided for interns relocating to the area
  • Housing stipend potentially available

Internship requires a high level of respect for team members and animals. Interns must demonstrate communication, time-management skills and have a high regard for animal welfare, as well as possess the ability to adapt and function effectively in a fast paced, changing environment.

Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Be currently enrolled at a 2- or 4-year college or university
  • Have a long term interest in the swine industry or an agricultural-related field
  • Be capable of lifting a minimum of 50 pounds with reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to do basic math – addition, subtraction, and multiplication
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Pursuing a degree in animal science or related field
  • Possesses leadership, communication, and time-management skills
  • Industry experience preferred, but not required

Additional Requirements:

  • This position may require operating a company vehicle. Any internship offer for this position is contingent upon the review of applicant’s motor vehicle record.
  • The record will be reviewed to determine insurability based on WPI’s company policy and insurance carrier. A Class D license and proof of insurance are required.
  • A dependable, personal vehicle is required of all interns for the daily work commute. Mileage in excess of 40 miles round trip will be reimbursed.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to move throughout the farm; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, climb 3-foot gates, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of up to 50 pounds. Position requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp. Frequently required, for extended, for extended periods of time, to sit, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, and communicate.
