Position Summary

The Assistant Project Engineer is responsible for supporting the technical and financial administration of assigned projects. This role works closely with owners, subcontractors, vendors, utility companies, and local, state, and federal agencies to help ensure work is completed safely, on schedule, and within budget. The Project Engineer reports to the Project Manager or others as assigned and is expected to work collaboratively with both craft and salaried employees.

Position Description

  1. Review and analyze information gathered from site inspections, blueprints, specifications, proposals, and other project documentation.
  2. Assist with preconstruction activities to identify potential risks, verify original site conditions, and participate in preconstruction meetings.
  3. Coordinate project schedules and monitor overall construction progress.
  4. Review subcontractor quotations with the Project Estimator, participate in subcontract negotiations and preparation, and work directly with subcontractors throughout the project.
  5. Monitor subcontractor pay estimates, submittals, and work progress to ensure compliance with project plans and specifications.
  6. Coordinate subcontractor meetings as needed and keep the Project Manager informed of progress, concerns, and potential issues.
  7. Review vendor and supplier quotations with the Project Estimator and/or Project Manager.
  8. Order contract materials in a timely manner, monitor delivery schedules and inventories, and verify that delivered materials conform to project plans and specifications.
  9. Work directly with vendors and suppliers to manage required submittals, including certificates, shop drawings, catalogue cuts, samples, and other required documentation.
  10. Review, phase code, approve, and submit invoices for payment.
  11. Maintain project files, including plans, specifications, budget information, schedules, correspondence, and design changes.
  12. Coordinate quality control testing and inspections with agencies and third-party providers.
  13. Obtain necessary utility clearances and required permits.
  14. Review and approve purchase order commitments for job-specific purchases.
  15. Confirm adherence to specifications and assist in resolving project conflicts.
  16. Identify equipment needs, create forecasts, and support responsible equipment utilization.
  17. Under the direction of the Project Manager, estimate, prepare, and submit change order requests to the Owner.
  18. Assist in negotiating change orders with the Owner, including costs associated with labor, equipment, materials, subcontractors, and project overhead.
  19. Maintain the current Change Order Log and follow up with the Owner on approvals.
  20. Support the implementation of project safety plans, hazard analyses, safety meetings, method statements, and safe work practices as required by the Company and regulatory agencies.
  21. Mentor field staff employees in safe work practices and help reinforce the Company’s safety culture.
  22. Perform safety observations and ensure deficiencies are corrected immediately.
  23. Prepare and process project closeout documentation, including as-built drawings, operation and maintenance manuals, acceptance letters, Notice of Completion, Well Completion Reports, final billing invoices, retention billing, and lien releases from subcontractors and material suppliers.
  24. Maintain regular and reliable attendance.

This position offers a salary range of $75,000 to $110,000 annually.

Position Requirements

Required Education, Experience, and Technical Knowledge

  1. Candidates must have the legal right to work in the US without employer sponsorship.
  2. Must have the legal right to work in the United States without employer sponsorship.
  3. High school diploma or GED required; bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or technical school, or equivalent experience, preferred.
  4. Minimum of 2–3 years of construction experience required.
  5. Experience reading and interpreting plans, specifications, and project documents required.
  6. Strong understanding of project procedures and administrative processes from project start-up through closeout.
  7. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Project, required.
  8. Experience with AutoCAD Lite, PDF editing software, HCSS HeavyJob, and other construction-related software preferred.
  9. Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required.
  10. Must obtain and maintain CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
  11. Ability to perform other duties as assigned.
