POSITION SUMMARY
The Custodial Specialist is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and professional environment throughout assigned agency facilities. This position performs routine custodial services, scheduled deep cleaning, floor care, and general housekeeping to ensure all offices, common areas, restrooms, meeting spaces, kitchens, stairwells, and other assigned areas are maintained in accordance with agency cleanliness and safety standards. The Custodial Specialist operates cleaning equipment, utilizes appropriate cleaning products and procedures, identifies maintenance concerns, and supports a positive environment for employees, visitors, and residents.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Maintain a clean, safe, sanitary, and professional environment throughout assigned agency facilities by performing routine custodial and housekeeping duties.
- Clean and sanitize offices, cubicles, conference rooms, training rooms, reception areas, hallways, stairwells, elevators, kitchens, breakrooms, entrances, restrooms, and other assigned interior and exterior areas.
- Perform routine and periodic floor care, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, buffing, stripping, waxing, carpet care, and other floor maintenance activities.
- Clean and maintain windows, interior glass, blinds, window ledges, vents, stair rails, restroom partitions and doors, high-touch surfaces, and other building fixtures to agency cleanliness standards.
- Empty, clean, and disinfect trash receptacles; remove trash, recycling, and designated materials from assigned areas; and replenish restroom and kitchen supplies as needed.
- Perform scheduled deep-cleaning activities, including moving lightweight furniture to clean underneath, detailing stairwells, restrooms, common areas, and other assigned spaces.
- Safely operate custodial equipment and utilize approved cleaning chemicals and products in accordance with agency procedures and manufacturer recommendations.
- Monitor custodial supply inventory and notify the appropriate staff when cleaning supplies, paper products, or related materials require replenishment.
- Identify and report maintenance concerns, damaged equipment, safety hazards, or facility issues to the appropriate supervisor and place appropriate safety signage, including wet floor signs, when necessary.
- Prioritize assignments to meet operational needs while maintaining quality, safety, and cleanliness standards throughout assigned facilities.
- Maintain compliance with agency policies, infection prevention practices, OSHA standards, and all applicable safety procedures.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of custodial cleaning methods, equipment, materials, and safe work practices.
- Ability to safely operate custodial equipment and properly handle cleaning products and chemicals in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and agency procedures.
- Ability to identify safety concerns, maintenance needs, and facility issues and report them promptly to the appropriate supervisor.
- Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with employees, residents, visitors, vendors, and contractors.
- Demonstrates sound judgment, professionalism, and the ability to maintain confidentiality when appropriate.
- Ability to adapt to changing priorities and perform assigned duties with minimal supervision.
- Commitment to complying with agency policies, safety procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Must meet DCFS/CANTS Clearance Requirements
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and maintain proof of automobile insurance
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Ability to efficiently perform job responsibilities with minimal supervision is required.
- Ability to safely lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds and frequently climb stairs, bend, stoop, kneel, and perform other physical activities required to complete custodial duties.
- Previous custodial, janitorial, housekeeping, facilities maintenance, or related experience.
- Experience operating commercial custodial equipment, including floor care equipment, vacuums, buffers, or similar equipment.
- Knowledge of proper cleaning techniques, infection prevention practices, and OSHA safety standards related to custodial services.

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position primarily works throughout the agency’s Fairview Heights Corporate Office and is responsible for maintaining assigned offices, common areas, conference rooms, kitchens, restrooms, hallways, stairwells, and other interior spaces.
The position requires frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, twisting, pushing, pulling, and climbing stairs throughout the workday. Regular lifting, carrying, and moving of custodial equipment, supplies, and materials is required. Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds independently and heavier items with assistance when appropriate.
Work is performed primarily indoors and may involve routine exposure to cleaning chemicals, dust, dirt, moisture, odors, and varying noise levels. The employee is expected to follow all agency safety procedures and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when required.

- Mops, brooms, dusting tools, cleaning carts, and other custodial equipment
- Cleaning chemicals, disinfectants, and related custodial supplies
- Standard office equipment as needed to complete required documentation and communication
- Any other equipment necessary to perform assigned duties
