Position Overview:
The Medical Assistant (MA) provides direct clinical and administrative support to healthcare operations within a federally contracted ICE short-term residential facility in Alexandria, LA.
Working under the supervision of licensed nursing and medical personnel, the Medical Assistant supports intake screenings, vital signs collection, medication administration processes, patient flow coordination, medical documentation, specimen collection, and healthcare support services. This role requires strong clinical skills, attention to detail, sound judgment, and the ability to perform effectively in a fast-paced environment serving individuals from diverse cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions:
Clinical Support & Patient Care
Assist licensed medical staff with intake medical screenings, health assessments, and patient evaluations.Obtain and document vital signs, medical histories, and screening information.Perform point-of-care testing and specimen collection within scope of certification and training.Assist providers and nursing staff during examinations, treatments, and clinical procedures.Identify and report signs of illness, injury, behavioral health concerns, or medical emergencies to licensed staff.Support infection prevention and control practices throughout the facility.Medication Support
Assist licensed nursing staff with medication administration processes and documentation.Support medication reconciliation activities during intake and discharge.Ensure medications are properly stored, labeled, secured, and organized.Assist with medication distribution and return procedures in accordance with facility protocols.Patient Flow & Coordination
Coordinate patient movement throughout the healthcare unit for screenings, appointments, and medical services.Prepare examination rooms, screening stations, and treatment areas.Assist with intake and discharge healthcare processes.Coordinate healthcare appointments, referrals, and off-site medical visits as directed.Medical Documentation & Records
Maintain accurate, timely, and complete healthcare documentation.Enter patient information, screening results, test results, and clinical activities into the electronic health record (EHR) system.Assist with management and organization of healthcare records and referrals.Ensure documentation complies with applicable healthcare, contractual, and organizational standards.Maintain confidentiality and security of all protected health informationMedical Supply & Equipment Management
Maintain inventory of medical supplies, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).Restock examination rooms, screening stations, and treatment areas.Monitor supply levels and report shortages or reorder needs.Ensure medical equipment is clean, functional, and available for use.Report equipment maintenance or replacement needs promptly.Compliance & Safety
Perform duties within the scope of Medical Assistant certification and applicable state regulations.Comply with all facility policies, healthcare protocols, and contractual requirements.Follow infection control, safety, emergency response, and incident reporting procedures.Adhere to all mandatory reporting requirements and facility safeguarding standards.Complete required trainings and maintain all required certifications.Collaboration & Communication
Collaborate with physicians, nurses, behavioral health personnel, and interdisciplinary team members.Support effective communication regarding patient care needs and healthcare operations.Participate in shift briefings, team meetings, and operational updates.Deliver services in a culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and professional manner.Required Qualifications & Core Competencies:
High school diploma or GED required.Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program required.Current Medical Assistant certification (CMA, RMA, CCMA, or equivalent nationally recognized credential).Minimum two (2) years of Medical Assistant experience in a clinical healthcare setting.Experience obtaining vital signs, performing point-of-care testing, specimen collection, and medical documentation.Knowledge of infection control practices, medical terminology, and healthcare procedures.Experience utilizing electronic health record (EHR) systems.Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.Current CPR and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain prior to start date.Ability to obtain and maintain required background clearances.Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English for documentation and coordination purposesDesired Skills:
Experience working with pediatric, family, or residential populations.Experience in government-contracted, residential, correctional, shelter, or congregate-care healthcare environments.Bilingual proficiency in Spanish or another commonly encountered language.Phlebotomy certification or demonstrated phlebotomy experience.Experience supporting infectious disease testing and screening programs.Training in Trauma-Informed Care, crisis intervention, or de-escalation techniques.Experience working with diverse populationsConditions of Employment:

Ability to stand, walk, and move throughout the facility for extended periods.Ability to respond quickly to medical emergencies.Ability to lift and move medical supplies and equipment up to 50 pounds.Ability to perform repetitive clinical tasks requiring manual dexterity.Ability to sit at a computer workstation for extended periods while completing documentation.Work Environment:
Fully on-site position at a federally contracted short-term residential ICE facility in Alexandria, LA.Fast-paced, high-volume healthcare environment supporting individuals and families in short-term residential care.Potential exposure to infectious diseases, bloodborne pathogens, and other healthcare-related hazards; appropriate PPE will be provided.Work schedules may include days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts.Other Duties & Information:
