Lead the Shop. Build the Team. Deliver Quality Steel.
Superior Rigging & Erecting is seeking an experienced Structural Steel Fabrication Shop Manager to take ownership of daily operations within our Atlanta fabrication shop.
This is a true management position—not simply a lead welder or working foreman role. You will lead the shop workforce, translate project schedules into daily production plans, establish clear expectations, and drive accountability for safety, quality, productivity, and on-time delivery. This position requires strong technical credibility and a visible shop-floor presence, but its primary responsibility is leading the operation through people, processes, and disciplined execution.
Since 1952, Superior Rigging & Erecting has delivered complex crane, rigging, steel erection, heavy transport, fabrication, and specialty construction solutions throughout the United States. Our reputation has been built on technical expertise, quality execution, and an uncompromising commitment to safety. At Superior, we make the Tough Look Easy.
What You Will Own
- Lead daily structural and miscellaneous steel fabrication operations, including welders, fitters, fabricators, and shop leads.
- Convert project schedules into clear daily and weekly production plans, crew assignments, labor requirements, and overtime needs.
- Establish expectations and hold shop personnel accountable for attendance, productivity, workmanship, safety, and workplace conduct.
- Recruit, onboard, train, coach, and develop shop personnel in partnership with the Fabrication Manager and Human Resources.
- Review shop drawings, contract drawings, specifications, and weld requirements before fabrication begins.
- Identify drawing conflicts, constructability concerns, sequencing issues, and material requirements before they affect production.
- Coordinate with Fabrication Management, Project Management, Engineering, Detailing, QA/QC, Purchasing, and field operations to keep work moving.
- Track production progress, labor hours, rework, bottlenecks, and schedule risks—and take corrective action when performance falls behind.
- Partner with QA/QC to ensure fabricated products meet project specifications, AWS requirements, and applicable AISC standards.
- Help lead the shop’s continued development toward AISC certification and build the processes, documentation, and accountability required to sustain it.
- Enforce company safety requirements, proper equipment use, PPE expectations, shop organization and housekeeping standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve workflow, production controls, shop layout, training, and overall operating efficiency
- 5+ years of management experience in a structural steel fabrication shop.
- Experience supervising welders, fitters, and fabrication personnel.
- Strong knowledge of structural steel fabrication processes and shop operations.
- Ability to read and interpret structural steel shop drawings.
- Experience managing production schedules, manpower, and workflow.
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to make sound decisions in a fast-paced production environment.
- Ability to work full-time onsite in Atlanta, Georgia.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with AISC-certified fabrication operations.
- Heavy industrial or commercial structural steel fabrication experience.
- Experience supporting steel erection, crane, or rigging projects.
- Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience.
- Experience developing supervisors, lead personnel, and future leaders.
