Travel: Regular travel; members must provide transportation to and from their service site. Additional travel may be required for approved activities.

Service Opportunity

College Advising Corps (CAC) seeks motivated individuals to serve in high-need high schools across California’s Central Valley. Using CAC’s near-peer advising model, advisers help students explore and pursue colleges, community colleges, career and technical programs, apprenticeships, military service, employment, and other postsecondary pathways. Members work with students, families, educators, and community partners to improve access to advising and resources.

The anticipated two-year opportunity consists of two separate annual AmeriCorps service terms. A second term depends on successful completion of the first, continued eligibility, available funding and positions, and applicable program requirements. Members gain experience in advising, leadership, communication, data management, and community engagement.

About College Advising Corps

CAC is a national nonprofit expanding postsecondary opportunities for students from under-resourced communities. CAC places trained college graduates in high schools to provide personalized guidance and support for students’ educational and career goals.

Requirements:

Essential Service Activities

Student Advising and Planning

• Provide individual and group advising on postsecondary exploration, applications, affordability, enrollment, and transition readiness.

• Help students identify interests, strengths, career goals, and appropriate pathways, including college, technical training, apprenticeships, military service, and employment.

• Apply CAC’s grade-level advising framework and support admissions, scholarship, and financial aid applications, including FAFSA when appropriate.

• Track advising milestones, follow up with students, and connect them to relevant school and community resources.

Student, Family, and School Engagement

• Lead workshops, classroom presentations, and information sessions; share accessible communications, checklists, and deadline reminders.

• Engage parents, guardians, and caregivers; maintain positive relationships, professional boundaries, and confidentiality.

• Collaborate with counselors, teachers, administrators, fellow advisers, and community partners without assuming school personnel responsibilities.

• Participate in school-approved outreach and represent CAC and AmeriCorps professionally.

Program Accountability and Development

• Document advising activities, student progress, and outcomes accurately in GRACE, CAC’s case management platform; protect confidential records.

• Use data to guide outreach; submit required service reports and use approved communication and technology platforms.

• Complete required service hours, orientation, training, meetings, and professional development; comply with the Member Service Agreement, AmeriCorps rules, CAC policies, and school/district requirements.

• Participate in other approved service activities consistent with CAC’s educational mission and AmeriCorps requirements.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and ability to meet AmeriCorps eligibility and enrollment requirements.

• Commitment to student success and expanded postsecondary opportunity.

• Strong interpersonal, written, verbal, organizational, and time-management skills.

• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with students, families, educators, and community partners.

• Sound judgment, confidentiality, professionalism, and willingness to learn digital tools and complete required training.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience supporting students, young adults, or families; familiarity with college admissions, financial aid, career exploration, or postsecondary education; workshop facilitation; Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, or similar tools; adaptability and initiative; interest in education, community service, and leadership development; bilingual English/Spanish skills.

AmeriCorps Eligibility

Members must be at least 17 at the start of service; be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or lawful permanent residents; meet CAC’s degree requirement; successfully complete eligibility verification and required National Service Criminal History Check procedures; and meet all other applicable AmeriCorps enrollment and participation requirements. Eligibility is determined under applicable laws, regulations, and program rules.

Living Allowance and Benefits

Members receive a living allowance during the approved service term, not an hourly wage or salary. Subject to eligibility and program requirements, benefits may include a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award after successful completion, health coverage, childcare assistance, qualifying student loan forbearance and possible interest benefits, training, and professional development. Specific amounts, availability, and eligibility will be communicated before enrollment.

Service Environment and Accessibility

Service is primarily in high schools and involves student and family interactions, computer work, presentations, and events. Approved local or out-of-state travel may be required. Some activities involve moving materials up to 15 pounds. Reasonable accommodations are available in accordance with applicable law.

Equal Opportunity

CAC provides equal access to national service and follows applicable federal, state, and local nondiscrimination requirements. Qualified applicants are considered without regard to race, color, national origin, religion, sex, age, disability, or other legally protected status, subject to lawful AmeriCorps eligibility requirements.
