Job Description
This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Sr. Data Architect, Large Scale Distributed Systems in the United States.
This role is focused on designing and evolving mission-critical distributed systems that operate at extreme scale, supporting tens of millions of connected sensors and high-throughput event processing pipelines. You will define the architectural backbone for real-time and batch data platforms that process massive volumes of events across globally distributed environments. Working at the intersection of engineering, data, security, and product, you will shape how large-scale systems are built for scalability, resilience, and performance. This is a high-impact technical leadership role where architectural decisions directly influence platform reliability, efficiency, and global security outcomes. You will guide cross-functional teams, establish engineering standards, and drive alignment on complex system design decisions. The environment is highly collaborative, innovation-driven, and focused on solving large-scale distributed computing challenges.
In this role, you will define and lead the architecture for large-scale distributed systems designed to ingest, process, and analyze high-velocity data streams at massive scale. You will set technical direction across data platforms, ensuring systems are scalable, secure, and optimized for performance and cost. Key responsibilities include:
- Designing distributed architectures capable of processing data from 50M+ connected sensors and high-volume event streams
- Building and optimizing real-time and batch data pipelines for ingestion, transformation, and storage
- Defining architectural standards for scalability, fault tolerance, reliability, and performance optimization
- Leading decisions on streaming, messaging, and data storage technologies across enterprise platforms
- Establishing SLAs, SLOs, observability frameworks, and operational resilience strategies
- Ensuring system designs meet security, compliance, and data governance requirements
- Partnering with engineering, product, and security teams to align architecture with business objectives
- Providing technical leadership, mentorship, and design review oversight across multiple teams
This role requires deep expertise in distributed systems architecture and proven experience designing and scaling high-throughput, mission-critical platforms. Candidates should bring strong technical leadership skills and the ability to operate in complex, enterprise-scale environments.
- 10+ years of experience in distributed systems, backend engineering, or data architecture
- Proven success designing and scaling systems to tens of millions of connected devices or equivalent high-scale environments (IoT, telecom, fintech, ad-tech, etc.)
- Strong expertise in distributed systems principles including CAP theorem, consistency models, replication, and partitioning strategies
- Hands-on experience with streaming and messaging systems such as Kafka, Pulsar, or equivalent
- Experience with real-time and batch processing frameworks (e.g., Flink, Spark, Beam)
- Strong knowledge of scalable data stores such as Cassandra, DynamoDB, Bigtable, ClickHouse, or Elasticsearch
- Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Go, Java, Scala, or Rust
- Experience designing multi-region, highly available, low-latency architectures
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence cross-functional technical strategy
- Preferred experience with IoT platforms, edge-to-cloud systems, or AI/ML data pipelines
- Competitive base salary ranging from $187,000 to $349,250, depending on location and experience
- Eligibility for variable compensation and equity participation
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Flexible work environment with remote collaboration options
- Flexible time off and paid wellness days
- Volunteer days and annual community engagement opportunities
- Career development and global collaboration opportunities
- Inclusive, innovation-driven engineering culture
