Job Description
Title: Volunteer Engagement Manager Job Group Category: Exempt Type: Full-Time
Unit: Operations Schedule: Mon-Fri Hours: 40/week
Direct Reports: Yes Reports to: Executive Director
Position Summary:
Manages large volunteer program with a focus on community engagement opportunities for individuals and groups from schools, businesses, religious organizations and others. This position collaborates across all departments to facilitate the efficient utilization of volunteer resources.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborates with senior staff to incorporate volunteer community constituencies into development strategies and educates volunteers about additional options to support Bread of the Mighty (BOM).
- Manage volunteer recruitment efforts by promoting BOM volunteer opportunities; coordinating with Executive Director and marketing team to promote on the BOM website, community volunteer organizations, tabling at community events, social media, et al
- Responsible for developing orientation program that communicates opportunities and expectations for volunteers.
- Communicates safety guidelines and monitors volunteer safety; communicates safety guidelines to staff and ensures safety standards are followed.
- Develops strong volunteer recognition program through events, newsletters, bulletin board postings, and events.
- Oversees daily calendar and ensures documentation of daily rosters and monthly calendars of scheduled volunteers is accomplished.
- Manages the volunteer database to ensure accurate data and documentation of volunteer service. Facilitates communications with volunteers; analyzes data to determine future needs of volunteer program and to communicate current program status.
- Communicates program’s status through a variety of reports, publications, and the volunteer newsletter.
- Identifies new opportunities for volunteer/community engagement in response to changing community and BOM needs.
- Stays abreast of current best practices in volunteer management.
- Effectively functions outside of the organization and with the development team (recruitment of volunteers) and at the same time merges duties with the operations team (upon arrival and work as volunteers at the warehouse).
- Creates an excellent volunteer experience which drives the desire of volunteers to return.
- Establishes various volunteer opportunities to incorporate families and other identified groups of constituents.
- Actively recruits volunteers at businesses, business groups, networking groups, colleges and universities, churches, affinity groups, schools and other groups to be identified.
- In partnership with the Executive Director and other food bank leadership and staff, assist in designing and implementing projects and events to cultivate and steward volunteer base.
- Track and evaluate volunteer engagement to identify those most likely to become donors, using data to personalize follow-up communications and outreach.
- Assist in identifying, cultivating and soliciting individuals, corporations and foundations believed to have philanthropic interests that match strategic food bank initiatives and needs in coordination with the appropriate relationship managers.
- Motivate and facilitate volunteers to maximize fundraising through gratitude service projects.
- Work with other team members as appropriate to design and implement recognition, stewardship activities and special events for volunteers and prospects affiliated with the food bank.
- Work with volunteers to amplify their connection and corporate connections to the food bank.
Job Qualifications:
- B.A./B.S. degree or equivalent experience preferred
- Experience managing a volunteer program
- Valid Driver’s License
Competencies:
- Strong knowledge of volunteer management, recruitment, retention, and training; Teacher training a plus
- Outstanding interpersonal and customer service skills
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills; comfort with public speaking
- Previous management experience and demonstrated ability to lead staff in achieving goals
- Interest in and commitment to the mission of the BOM
- Strong computer skills including MS Office Suite, and database management (e.g. galaxy digital)
- Highly organized; able to prioritize assignments and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to work independently and in a team setting with people of diverse backgrounds/circumstances
Work Environment:
This position is in an office environment and involves some need for a flexible schedule to accommodate BOM events. The following physical activities are necessary in the performance of this job: Ability to use a computer to accomplish the duties of the position, including writing and seeing. Ability to think strategically and analytically. Mobility to respond to volunteer and staff needs in various parts of a spacious facility. Ability to communicate expectations and establish priorities. Social skills to collaborate with colleagues and community members in a pro-active manner.
