Assistant Controller

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an Assistant Controller based in Canada.

We are seeking a detail-oriented and proactive accounting professional to support financial operations within a growing SaaS organization. In this role, you will oversee key accounting activities, ensure the accuracy of financial reporting, and contribute to efficient month-end and year-end closing processes. You will collaborate closely with the Finance team, support audit preparation, and help maintain strong internal controls. The position also offers opportunities to improve accounting workflows, optimize financial systems, and streamline expense management. You will work with modern financial tools and contribute to the continuous improvement of accounting processes in a fully remote environment. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced accounting professional who enjoys solving problems, managing priorities, and taking ownership of financial accuracy. Your work will help strengthen financial operations while supporting an organization dedicated to empowering nonprofit communities through technology.

Accountabilities
  • Manage monthly accounting activities: Review revenue transactions for accuracy, investigate discrepancies, and ensure financial records are complete and reliable.
  • Oversee month-end closing: Coordinate closing activities, complete and review account reconciliations, and prepare monthly financial statements with supporting notes for Finance team review.
  • Administer expense management systems: Manage the expense platform, issue virtual cards when needed, approve employee expense reports, maintain consistency with accounting system updates, and transfer expense data into the general ledger.
  • Supervise accounting personnel: Oversee the Staff Accountant, provide training and guidance, and review journal entries, reconciliations, and accounts payable submissions.
  • Support audits and year-end reporting: Prepare documentation for annual audits, respond to auditor inquiries, and compile year-end financial statements for external review.
  • Improve accounting systems and processes: Support software transitions, maintain accurate financial data, and identify opportunities to increase efficiency through automation and process improvements.
  • Assist with tax compliance: Gather documentation for external tax advisors and coordinate the preparation and annual filing of required 1099 forms.
  • Provide financial reporting support: Prepare ad hoc reports and analyses for Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) and other internal stakeholders as required.
Requirements
  • Professional experience: At least 6 years of relevant accounting experience, ideally in a SaaS or technology-focused organization.
  • Education: A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Accounting expertise: Strong understanding of general accounting principles, revenue recognition, account reconciliations, month-end close procedures, financial statement preparation, and audit support.
  • Technical proficiency: Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Excel and hands-on experience with NetSuite or comparable accounting platforms.
  • Systems adaptability: Ability to learn new software quickly, manage financial data across multiple platforms, and support system implementations or transitions.
  • Analytical skills: Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving abilities, with the capacity to investigate discrepancies and develop practical solutions.
  • Organization and attention to detail: Ability to manage competing priorities, maintain accurate records, and deliver high-quality work within established deadlines.
  • Communication and collaboration: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with finance colleagues, external auditors, tax advisors, and cross-functional teams.
  • Leadership capabilities: Experience reviewing accounting work, training colleagues, and providing constructive guidance to support team performance is an asset.
  • Work environment: Comfortable working independently in a remote setting while maintaining accountability, transparency, and effective collaboration.
Benefits
  • Competitive compensation: Annual salary ranging from CA$170,617.20 to CA$199,053.40 for candidates based in Canada.
  • Fully remote work: Flexibility to work remotely within the eligible hiring locations in Canada or the United States.
  • Meaningful impact: An opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven organization providing software solutions to nonprofit organizations.
  • Professional growth: Opportunities to strengthen accounting expertise, take ownership of financial processes, and contribute to operational improvements.
  • Collaborative culture: Work alongside a team that values empathy, innovation, accountability, and continuous learning.
  • Technology and process exposure: Hands-on experience with financial systems, expense management platforms, and ongoing process optimization initiatives.
