Available Shifts:

First Shift: 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Second Shift: 3:00 PM - 11:30 PM

Third Shift: 11:00 PM - 7:30 AM

Durham Exchange Club Industries (DECI) is seeking compassionate, dependable, and customer-focused individuals to join our team as Patient Escorts at the VA Medical Center in Durham, NC.

As a Patient Escort, you will play an essential role in supporting our nation's Veterans by providing safe, timely, and courteous transportation throughout the medical center. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys helping others, staying active throughout the workday, and making a meaningful impact through service.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Safely transport patients by wheelchair, stretcher, hospital bed, or escort patients to their destinations throughout the VA Medical Center.
  • Ensure patients arrive at appointments and treatment areas safely and on time.
  • Verify patient identification and transportation information before every transport.
  • Transport laboratory specimens, medical equipment, supplies, and patient belongings as needed.
  • Provide exceptional customer service to patients, family members, visitors, and medical staff.
  • Maintain a professional, courteous, and caring demeanor at all times.
  • Assist and comfort patients and families by demonstrating compassion, patience, and cultural sensitivity.
  • Communicate effectively with dispatchers and VA Medical Center staff.
  • Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and facility-wide emergency codes.
  • Operate transport equipment safely and report damaged or malfunctioning equipment promptly.
  • Accurately complete trip documentation and obtain required signatures.
  • Utilize handheld radios, pagers, and cell phones to maintain communication and receive assignments.
  • Maintain familiarity with VA Medical Center routes and locations.
  • Support a safe environment for patients, visitors, and team members by following established policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Valid Real ID or Driver's License issued by North Carolina or another U.S. state.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English fluently.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Professional, dependable, and service-oriented attitude.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, and alternate shifts as needed.
  • Ability to Pass a Federal Background Check

Preferred

  • Previous experience in a hospital, healthcare, patient transport, or customer service environment.

Physical Requirements

  • This position requires frequent movement throughout the workday and the ability to:
  • Walk continuously during scheduled shifts.
  • Push, pull, and maneuver wheelchairs, stretchers, and hospital beds.
  • Bend, stoop, reach, twist, and perform physical tasks related to patient transport.
  • Safely assist patients of varying mobility levels.
