Job Description

Description:

If you're an experienced welder and fabricator who enjoys helping others build their skills, the Weld Training Lead position at Northern Manufacturing may be a great next step.

Northern Manufacturing is a custom metal fabrication company specializing in complex stainless and carbon steel fabrications. We bring new welders into our training program to build the welding, fabrication, print-reading, and shop skills they need to be successful in our custom fabrication environment.

As our Weld Training Lead, you'll take the lead in developing those employees—from teaching welding fundamentals and Northern's processes to coaching them through real-world fabrication work and evaluating when they're ready to move into production.

What You'll Do

  • Train and coach new welders in MIG and TIG welding, print reading, fabrication fundamentals, and safe work practices.
  • Teach Northern's production and quality processes, including first-piece inspection, routes, MES, and applicable shop procedures.
  • Combine hands-on instruction with assigned online training to help employees apply what they're learning on the shop floor.
  • Work with trainees at different skill levels, providing clear feedback, demonstrations, and additional coaching where needed.
  • Evaluate and document trainee progress and help determine readiness to transition into production.
  • Provide day-to-day leadership and address performance, safety, quality, and attendance expectations as needed.
  • Partner with weld leadership, Quality, HR, and other team members to support trainee development and successful placement into production.
  • Help continually improve Northern's weld training program as our needs and workforce develop.

Why Northern Manufacturing?

At Northern, we don't just run the same weld over and over. We're a custom fabrication shop, which means our welders work from prints to fit, weld, and build a wide variety of assemblies and projects.

The Weld Training Lead plays an important role in preparing the next generation of Northern welders for that environment. You'll have the opportunity to use the skills you've built throughout your career in a different way—developing people, improving our training program, and helping new welders build the foundation for successful careers in fabrication.

Schedule

  • 1st Shift: Monday–Friday, 6:00am to 3:30pm (45-hours)

Benefits

Northern offers a competitive benefits package, including:

  • Medical, dental, vision, life, and short-term disability insurance after 90 days
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • 401(k) with company match after 90 days
  • Annual profit-sharing contribution to your 401(k)
  • Quarterly bonus opportunities
  • In-house welding training and development

Northern Manufacturing Co. is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Final candidates complete a pre-employment background check and drug screening conducted in accordance with applicable law.

Requirements:

We're looking for someone who knows welding and fabrication—and can turn that knowledge into effective training for someone else.

  • Strong MIG and TIG welding and fabrication skills.
  • Strong print-reading skills and experience working from prints and 3D models.
  • The ability to explain and demonstrate welding and fabrication techniques clearly.
  • Leadership or mentoring experience and an interest in developing others.
  • The ability to give constructive feedback and hold employees accountable to expectations.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adjust your approach based on an employee's skill level and learning needs.
  • Comfort using computers and manufacturing systems such as MES.

Formal teaching experience isn't required. We're more interested in someone who has strong welding and fabrication knowledge, communicates well, and genuinely enjoys helping other people improve.
