About This Position
Under the direction of the Director of Facilities with onsite supervision by the Facility Manager, the Maintenance Custodian gets assigned to complete building maintenance projects at all family shelters. The Maintenance Custodian must have demonstrated technical ability in painting, carpentry electrical and plumbing with some knowledge of the mechanical systems operating within the facility. The Maintenance Custodian moves through each family shelter ensuring all special project needs are completed. The Maintenance Custodian helps to complete work orders and may at times be called upon to assist in the cleaning of all vacant units so as to ensure we maintain the regulatory vacant room preparedness time frame of four hours.

- Reflects commitment to building a supportive work environment and maintains a positive attitude at the workplace and towards the job.
- Projects a good image in dealing with the public and its clients. Is willing to make an extra effort to help build a quality and caring shelter/program.
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- Experience working with a disadvantaged population is a plus.
- Must have the ability to lift at least fifty pounds and be able to work at least an eight hour shift primarily standing and moving.
- Must have the ability to take and follow instructions and follow through with assigned tasks, familiarity with basic cleaning equipment.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge in the areas of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, and painting and have a technical knowledge of mechanical systems operated within the physical plant.
- Valid NYS Driver’s License is required.
- Willing to become certified as a Fire Safety Coordinator is strongly desired.
