Job Description

About the Role:

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with developmental, intellectual, or physical disabilities by providing compassionate and personalized care. This position involves supporting clients in their daily activities, promoting independence, and fostering community integration. The DSP collaborates closely with families, healthcare providers, and other team members to develop and implement individualized support plans. Through consistent and respectful interaction, the DSP helps clients achieve their personal goals and maintain their dignity. Ultimately, this role is essential in creating a safe, supportive, and empowering environment that encourages growth and well-being.

Position Details

Location: Wethersfield-CTSchedule: 12 Hours per Week

Saturday: 2:00 pm-8:00 pm, Sunday: 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm

Minimum Qualifications:

    High school diploma or equivalent.Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.Ability to pass background checks and drug screenings as required.Basic knowledge of health and safety standards related to client care.Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

    Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities or in a caregiving role.Certification in CPR and First Aid.Training in behavior management techniques (PMT).Post-secondary education in human services, social work, or related fields.Familiarity with electronic documentation systems.

Responsibilities:

    Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:Assisting individuals with personal care and daily living activities.Supporting participation in community outings, recreational activities, and social events.Providing transportation to medical appointments, vocational programs, and community activities.Assisting with meal preparation, household chores, and maintaining a safe living environment.Implementing individualized service plans and supporting personal goals.Providing supervision and ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of individuals served.Completing required documentation, daily notes, and electronic records accurately and timely.Observing and reporting changes in physical, emotional, or behavioral health.Responding appropriately to emergencies and applying CPR/First Aid procedures when necessary.Maintaining confidentiality and adhering to HIPAA, DDS, and agency policies and procedures.

Skills:

The required skills such as effective communication and interpersonal abilities are essential for building trust and rapport with clients and their families. Attention to detail and organizational skills are used daily to accurately follow care plans and document client progress. Problem-solving skills help the DSP respond appropriately to unexpected situations or changes in client needs. Preferred skills like CPR certification and behavior management training enhance the DSP’s ability to provide safe and responsive care. Additionally, familiarity with electronic documentation supports efficient record-keeping and coordination with the broader care team.
