The Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing manufacturing costs, inventory, fixed assets, and operational expenses to ensure accurate financial reporting and support informed business decisions.
The role supports month-end close, budgeting, forecasting, inventory management, and continuous improvement initiatives throughout the organization.
Cost Accounting & Financial Analysis
- Analyze job costs, inventory balances, and expense accounts for accuracy and completeness to validate overall plant profitability.
- Investigate cost variances and financial discrepancies, perform root cause analysis, and provide recommendations for corrective actions and process improvements.
- Prepare and distribute monthly variance analyses related to material usage, labor, overhead, inventory, and production costs.
- Analyze product, customer, and project profitability and provide recommendations to improve margins and operational efficiency.
- Support management with financial modeling, ad hoc analyses, and special projects.
Inventory & Manufacturing Accounting
- Monitor inventory transactions and valuation to ensure compliance with company accounting policies and GAAP
- Analyze inventory reserves, excess and obsolete inventory, and inventory turnover metrics.
- Review Bills of Material (BOMs), routings, and manufacturing data to ensure costing accuracy.
- Evaluate manufacturing processes and cost drivers to support operational decision-making and continuous improvement initiatives.
General Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Maintain fixed asset records and depreciation schedules, ensuring accuracy and compliance with company policies and accounting standards.
- Prepare journal entries, month-end accruals, and other accounting transactions as necessary to support accurate financial reporting.
- Reconcile general ledger accounts to supporting documentation and investigate reconciling items in a timely manner.
- Assist with month-end and year-end closing activities, ensuring financial results are reported accurately and within established deadlines.
- Support forecasting and budgeting processes for plant operations, including location-specific and intercompany accounts
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, or related field required.
- 3+ years of accounting, cost accounting, manufacturing accounting, or financial analysis experience preferred.
- Manufacturing industry experience strongly preferred.
- Experience with Epicor Kinetic or similar manufacturing ERP systems preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel required
