Location: Boone, North Carolina | PRN | Variable Shifts

Compensation: Compensation is commensurate with education, experience, certification, and internal equity. Starting at $18.05 per hour.

What You'll Do as a Phlebotomist
  • Collect venous and capillary blood specimens from neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Perform specimen collection in both inpatient and outpatient settings using established laboratory protocols.
  • Accurately label, process, and transport specimens while maintaining specimen integrity.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory quality assurance, quality control, and safety standards.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and utilize laboratory information systems effectively.
  • Provide compassionate and professional interactions with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
  • Respond appropriately to patient needs and changes in condition during specimen collection.
  • Support UNC Health Appalachian's commitment to quality, patient safety, and exceptional service.
Qualifications Education
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Formal phlebotomy training or documented on-the-job training sufficient to qualify for phlebotomy certification required.
Experience
  • Completion of training that includes a minimum of 100 successful venipunctures and 50 capillary collections required.
  • Previous phlebotomy experience preferred.
Licenses/Certifications
  • Successful completion of an accredited phlebotomy program or documented on-the-job training required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association required at the time of hire.
  • National Phlebotomy Certification preferred but not required.
Skills & Abilities
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with patients, families, physicians, and staff.
  • Competency in specimen collection, processing, and laboratory safety procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality standards.
  • Ability to use laboratory computer systems and type a minimum of 25 words per minute.
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Physical & Work Environment Physical Demands
  • Frequently lifts, positions, pushes, pulls, and/or transfers up to and greater than 50 pounds.
  • Manual dexterity and mobility required.
  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and walking.
  • Frequent bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
  • Near visual acuity required to perform specimen collection and documentation activities.
Working Conditions
  • Regular exposure to bloodborne pathogens.
  • Frequent exposure to laboratory chemicals, reagents, biological specimens, and healthcare-related hazards.
  • Frequent exposure to electrical and mechanical laboratory equipment.
  • Subject to variable schedules, including days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency situations.
  • Continuous standing and walking for extended periods.
  • Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of materials greater than 50 pounds.
  • Frequent hand, finger, and wrist repetition requiring moderate dexterity.
  • Frequent close eye work and detailed specimen processing tasks.
  • Frequent exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation environments, including x-ray and microwave areas.
