JOB SUMMARY of ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The Clinical Educator assumes responsibility for staff orientation, competency assessment, and professional development of the organization’s clinical staff on the assigned unit/department. Provides efficient and effective educational services and resources, which enable staff to meet patients and other customer’s needs for high value, high quality, cost sensitive patient- and family-centered care within the framework of service excellence and evidence-based best practices. Fosters teamwork within and across units/departments. Develops and facilitates opportunities for staff to continuously refine and advance their competencies in patient care, teaching, critical thinking, and judgment.
The Clinical Educator applies technological and information management skills in all aspects of their practice. Functions as learning facilitators, change agents, mentors, leaders, champions for Scientific Inquiry. Advocates for the Nursing Professional Development Specialty and partners for practice transitions. Supports licensed and non-licensed healthcare personnel in onboarding, orientation, ongoing competency, and role development. Utilizes evidence-based practice to standardize care, align policies and procedures, set the standard for patient care. Carries out all responsibilities in alignment with the current Nursing Professional Development Scope and Standards of Practice. Designs and analyzes tools, theories, skills, and knowledge within the specialty to improve the healthcare practice of learners.
REQUIRED EDUCATION TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE; CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing holding a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), and currently licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in Washington. Master’s degree in nursing or completed within 3 years of hire. Minimum of 1 year experience in teaching adult learners in a clinical setting or similar experience. Experience in presentation/training of clinical skills, new technology, equipment, patient care, and standards of care or similar experience. Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required by date of hire. Certification in Nursing Professional Development or certification in nursing specialty. Must complete National Incident Management System IS 100 and 700 within 60 days of employment.
Desired for the position: prior experience as an educator and relevant clinical experience; documented experience in instructional design and adult learning modalities; experience with Learning Management Systems and creating web-based training.
SPECIAL EQUIPMENT, SKILLS OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Organizational ability, mentoring, coaching and leadership skills. Demonstrated clinical expertise in area standards. Knowledge and ability to apply current theories, techniques and practices of nursing and clinical education across specialties.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND HAZARDS:
Hazards include risk of exposure to communicable diseases and BBP, risk of injury from lifting patients and operation of equipment.
WORK CONTACT GROUP: All patient related hospital departments, patients, families, visitors, nursing personnel and medical staff.
SPECIAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds, lift and transport patients. Must be able to bend, stoop, push and pull. Walks and stands for most of the working day.

7. Organizes, implements, and evaluates programs that develop staff from student through expert, supporting the organization’s goals and objectives and addressing regulatory standards. |

8. Supports quality assessment and improvement initiatives and processes utilizing evidence-based practice. |

9. Communicates regularly with department leaders regarding employee education competencies and overall performance. |

10. Participates in education strategic planning and develops action plans that ensure both the department or service unit and the organization achieve annual objectives. Identifies and involves key stakeholders from other departments for quality and process improvement projects. 11. Develops strategies to meet educational / training needs, including competency assessment tools to comply with organizational and regulatory standards. Assists in the evaluation of staff skills as appropriate. |

Demonstrates competent clinical nursing skills with knowledge of professional nursing principles, practices/procedures and concepts, including an understanding of the principles of growth and development in assessing patient age specific needs. 13. Seeks opportunities to collaborate across department, service unit, and organizational boundaries. 14. Promotes a safe environment of care, complying with all regulations, through appropriate orientation and ongoing training of employees, policy development, and maintenance of appropriate documentation and records through collaboration with department leaders. 15. Provides frequent performance feedback to employees and facilitates employee success through coaching, mentoring, and providing opportunities to expand their skills and knowledge. Documents interventions and outcomes appropriately. 16. Participates in committees, project groups, or acts as co-chair as delegated by Nursing Director / CNO. 17. Other duties as assigned. |
