Job Description

Goodwyn Mills Cawood (GMC) is one of the largest privately held architecture and engineering firms in the Southeast.

GMC is seeking a Senior Archaeologist to join our Cultural Resources team. The Senior Archaeologist is responsible for conducting all phases of archaeological fieldwork, conducting artifact analyses, and writing all, or portions of, archaeological reports at the direction of the Technical Director. This role is a full-time position for any one of our home office locations, with work occurring in the Southeast region of the U.S.

Essential functions and responsibilities include:

  • Executing and conducting Phase I-III fieldwork and research associated with fieldwork
  • Authoring and contributing to archaeological reporting, ensuring all deliverables meet regulatory standards and quality standards
  • Supervising field crews and managing logistical requirements for Phase I-III archaeological projects to ensure timely and budget-conscious completion
  • Conducting background research to support site assessments and project excavations
  • Working closely with the Technical Director to align project outcomes with client needs and requirements

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, or closely related field
  • 5 years of experience
  • Proficiency in MS Office365, particularly Word, Access, Excel, and Powerpoint as well as ESRI Field Maps and AGOL
  • Competent with various hardware, including GPS units, Total Station, and RTK systems
  • Strong and demonstrable written and oral communication skills
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.

Licensure & Certifications

  • Meets Secretary of Interior (SOI) standards
  • Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) certification preferred
  • Valid Driver’s License and acceptable driving record

Travel

  • Cultural Resource staff are expected to travel to various work sites to perform fieldwork. 
  • 50% field work

Physical Demands

  • This position requires work to be performed in an office environment and in the field. Work done in the field may consist of exposure to various types of weather and temperatures. Staff may also be exposed to pollutants, chemicals, insects, and possibly water-borne pathogens. Employees are required to wear appropriate protective clothing and gear when performing fieldwork.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds
