Method to assess remote work: Peer Writing Specialists will be assessed both on their ability to adapt their skills and work to their peers in one-on-one sessions as well as satisfactory completion of all employment facets of the position. Several broad aspects that encompass performance will be taken into account:
Shift attendance, punctuality, and advanced notice of absences
Ability to work independently and exhibit model student behavior
Cooperation and teamwork with supervisors, colleagues, and peers
Adaptability to changing session dynamics and work environments
Actively setting realistic goals and seeking to grow skill set
To assess these metrics, Peer Writing Specialists will be observed twice on the semester calendar as a means of assessing work and assisting in growth and development. At the conclusion of each semester, a holistic assessment will also be issued to inform Peer Writing Specialists of overall performance. Finally, individual meetings may also serve as a supplementary metric.
Job Description
- Provide real-time constructive feedback in a one-on-one support setting to students via Zoom
- Assist students in fostering long-term growth at all stages of the writing/creation process (brainstorming, drafting, and revising) across disciplines
- Attend mandatory training sessions, staff meetings, and other professional development opportunities
- Participate in developing Writing Support resources and other support or representation options as assigned
- Maintain accurate timekeeping records and session reports via appropriate software programs
- Check and respond to work-related emails in a timely fashion, and communicate absences with appropriate lead time
Qualifications
- Peer Writing Specialists should be model students with a growth mindset and a strong desire to help their peers. While we can help you fine-tune specific skills for the job, a working knowledge of the writing process and how to identify and communicate constructive feedback to students is needed.
- As the work is fully remote, individuals need to be able to self-manage by tracking and holding appointments, completing time cards and sessions reports in an appropriate and timely manner, and providing actionable reports to their supervisor should any issue arise.
- Peer Writing Specialists should be able to represent Writing Support professionally in their interactions with students, staff, and faculty and contribute positively to a collaborative team environment.
- Familiarity with, or motivation to learn, various documentation styles (e.g., APA, MLA) and general writing center theory required.
- Finally, given the wide variety of students who use Writing Support services, the applicant must acknowledge and work to adapt into their practice Antioch Universitys core values of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging.
