We operate with honesty, transparency, trust, and respect. We collaborate openly, take shared ownership of outcomes, and succeed as a team.
Role Overview
We’re looking for an experienced engineer who’s shipped real product before — the kind of person who knows what tolerances actually matter, how to push back on a factory, and how to set the bar for how we engineer at Bells of Steel.
You'll serve as the technical lead and PEng authority for our mechanical engineering work, and the mentor for our junior engineering tech/EIT — with the opportunity, but not the requirement, to take on direct personnel management of them as well.
This is an in-person role out of our Calgary office. The best designs happen when you can walk into the warehouse, drop a sample on the platform, and load it up yourself.
What You’ll Be Doing- Taking a concept, refining it, and making it manufacturable — owning the design from first sketch through tooling and full production
- Designing innovative, multi-use, space-saving equipment that punches well above its price tag
- Producing the deliverables that move a product forward: 3D models, 2D concept drawings, occasional DXFs, and engineering reports (FEA and the like)
- Designing to ISO 20957 compliance so the gear is safe, certifiable, and built to standard
- Living in Autodesk Inventor day to day (SolidWorks experience is great too) — turning ideas into clean, manufacturable drawings and BOMs
- Working hand-in-hand with our overseas factories — including the occasional trip (1–2 per year) for tooling sign-off, sample reviews, and supplier audits, plus the odd industry trade show
- Pressure-testing your own designs IRL — assemble the sample, load up some plates, find the wobble before the customer does
- Collaborating across product, marketing, ops, and customer service so the gear works in real garages, basements, and spare bedrooms — not just on paper
- Owning the process, but staying nimble when priorities shift mid-project (and they will)
- Setting our design and drafting standards — the templates, the title blocks, the GD&T conventions, the BOM rules — so everything we ship works from the same playbook
- Understanding the voice of the customer through reviews and customer feedback, and incorporating that feedback into designs for new products and product revisions
- A Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field
- A P.Eng designation
- 4+ years of mechanical design experience, with real products shipped end-to-end
- Strong proficiency in Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks — Inventor is what you’ll primarily be working in
- Hands-on knowledge of steel fabrication (welding, tube bending, machining, finishing)
- Bonus points for experience with plastic and iron castings
- Solid experience working with overseas manufacturing partners — you know how to communicate spec, push back on samples, and keep samples on schedule
- A weightlifting or strength training background doesn’t hurt — at minimum, a real willingness to put hands on the gear and to learn strength training and learn about our customer base
- Strong interdepartmental communication — you can translate engineering-speak into plain English for the rest of the team
- Process-oriented, but not thrown off by a last-minute pivot
- $90,000–$130,000 base salary, depending on experience
- Health Spending Account
- Hybrid schedule based out of a Calgary office you’ll actually want to come into
- Employee discounts on all our gear
- Access to our staff gym
- A team that actually likes what they do
The pay range for this role is:
90,000 - 130,000 CAD per year(Calgary)
