Job Description

Hodder Fellowship
Location: Princeton, NJ

Salary Range or Pay Grade: $93,000

Description

The Lewis Center is designed to put the creative and performing arts at the heart of the Princeton experience. This mission is based on the conviction that exposure to the arts helps us to make sense of our lives and the lives of our neighbors. We pursue this mission by bringing together a vibrant community of people with different backgrounds, experiences, perspectives, and artistic practices.

Qualifications

The Hodder Fellowship will be given to artists of exceptional promise to pursue independent projects with Princeton University during the 2027-2028 academic year. Potential Hodder Fellows are composers, choreographers, performance artists, visual artists, or other kinds of artists or humanists who are selected more "for promise than for performance" and have "much more than ordinary intellectual and literary gifts" as traditionally defined. Given the strength of the applicant pool, most successful Fellows have published a first book or have similar achievements in their own fields; the Hodder is designed to provide Fellows with the "studious leisure" to undertake significant new work.

Application Instructions

Hodder Fellows spend an academic year with Princeton, but no formal teaching is involved. A $93,000 stipend is provided for this 10-month appointment as a Visiting Fellow.

The Lewis Center is committed to fostering an academic environment that acknowledges and encourages community. The successful candidate will pursue academic excellence in University settings.

  • Dance (choreography): 1-3 links to performances, rehearsals, or research. Must be continuous footage; do not send trailers, photographs or promotional materials. Specify with cue points no more than 3-4 minutes for each link. All cue points combined should be no more than 10 minutes to watch.

  • Music: 1-2 scores and/or links to examples of performance (10 minutes total). Video is optional.

  • Theater: Up to 15 pages writing sample and/or up to 10 design images (photos or renderings) and/or video/audio reel with cue points (no more than 10 minutes to watch).

  • Visual Arts: Up to 20 still images OR up to 10 minutes of video OR up to 10 still images and 5 minutes of video. Video can represent one work or excerpts; provide cue points if including a link to a longer work.

The Hodder Fellowship is a full-time appointment with Princeton. Fellows may not hold concurrent teaching positions at other institutions for the duration of the Fellowship.

These appointments are not intended to fund work leading to an advanced degree.

Past recipients of the Princeton Arts Fellowship and individuals who have had a sustained and continuous relationship with Princeton University are not eligible to apply. Those who have had an occasional and sporadic relationship with Princeton may apply.
