Manager - Payroll

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Manager - Payroll based in India.

In this role, you will lead end-to-end payroll operations within a large-scale, multi-country shared services environment, ensuring accurate, compliant, and timely payroll delivery across India and other APAC entities. You will oversee payroll teams, guide operational execution, and act as a key decision-maker for payroll processing, approvals, and governance. The role plays a critical part in ensuring statutory compliance, tax accuracy, and seamless coordination across HR, Finance, and external vendors. You will also drive continuous improvement initiatives, identifying automation opportunities and strengthening controls across payroll processes. This is a high-impact leadership position requiring strong stakeholder management, deep payroll expertise, and the ability to operate in a fast-paced, global organization. You will also be responsible for building team capability, ensuring operational resilience, and maintaining the highest standards of confidentiality and integrity.

Accountabilities:

In this role, you will oversee the full payroll lifecycle across multiple APAC countries while ensuring compliance, operational excellence, and strong team performance.

  • Lead end-to-end payroll operations for India and other APAC regions, ensuring accurate and timely payroll processing and disbursement
  • Manage, coach, and develop payroll teams, ensuring strong performance, capability building, and succession planning
  • Review and approve payroll outputs, payments, and statutory filings while ensuring compliance with local tax laws and regulations
  • Coordinate with HR, Finance, and external vendors to resolve payroll discrepancies and ensure seamless operations
  • Prepare and submit monthly, quarterly, and annual payroll reports, audits, and regulatory filings
  • Drive process improvements, automation initiatives, and standardization of payroll workflows to enhance efficiency and accuracy
  • Strengthen internal controls, data privacy practices, and compliance governance across payroll operations
  • Handle internal and external audits and ensure documentation and operational readiness at all times
  • Act as escalation point for complex payroll issues and ensure timely resolution with minimal operational disruption
Requirements:

This role requires deep payroll expertise across multiple geographies, strong leadership capability, and hands-on experience in managing complex, high-volume payroll operations.

  • 15+ years of payroll experience with strong exposure to India and multiple APAC countries
  • 5+ years of experience in people management within payroll or shared services environments
  • Strong understanding of payroll legislation, tax regulations, and compliance frameworks across APAC regions
  • Experience working with payroll systems such as Workday, SAP, and ADP Global View
  • Proven ability to manage end-to-end payroll operations in large, multinational organizations
  • Strong leadership, stakeholder management, and cross-functional collaboration skills
  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • Experience handling audits, governance, and payroll controls in complex environments
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage effectively across global teams
  • Ability to work under pressure, manage priorities, and meet strict deadlines consistently
