Employment type: Full-time, exempt

Position Summary
The Drafting Engineer owns the drawings a growing automotive manufacturer builds from. This role creates and maintains 3D models and 2D production drawings for vehicle structures, interiors, and installed systems, keeps engineering BOMs and drawing revisions accurate in the ERP system, and makes sure every station on the floor is building to the current release, never a stale one.
This is a strong fit for a detail-driven CAD professional who wants their drawings to be the single source of truth in a low-volume, high-mix production environment that is actively scaling, and who is comfortable walking to the line to see how a part is actually built.
Key Responsibilities
CAD Modeling & Production Drawings
- Create and maintain 3D models and fully dimensioned 2D production drawings for sheet metal parts, weldments, machined components, interior assemblies, and installed systems.
- Apply GD&T and tolerance callouts appropriate to the manufacturing process, so parts fit at assembly the first time.
- Generate flat patterns and DXF/cut files for CNC, laser, and router operations, and verify them against finished parts.
- Produce routing and installation drawings for electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems within the vehicle envelope.
Chassis Integration & Packaging
- Work from OEM-supplied chassis CAD data to package components, run interference checks, and detail mounting and attachment designs.
- Maintain accurate reference models of each chassis configuration in use, so packaging studies start from truth.
- Document body attachment points, pass-throughs, and modifications in drawings suitable for certification and compliance records.
BOM & Revision Control
- Build and maintain engineering BOMs in the ERP/MRP system; keep part numbers, quantities, and units of measure accurate to how parts are actually purchased and consumed.
- Own drawing revision control: process engineering change orders (ECOs), update affected drawings and BOMs, and coordinate cut-in units with production.
- Maintain the CAD file and drawing library with disciplined naming, versioning, and release status, so the current revision is always unambiguous.
Manufacturing Support
- Respond to drawing questions and redlines from the production floor same-day; incorporate as-built corrections back into the released drawing set.
- Detail fixtures, jigs, and templates that help the floor build repeatably.
- Support work instruction development with clear views, exploded assemblies, and callouts pulled from the CAD data.
Standards & Documentation
- Establish and maintain drawing standards: title blocks, layer and sheet conventions, and revision block practices.
- Prepare complete drawing packages to support quality documentation, supplier quotes, and regulatory submissions.
- Support prototype and R&D efforts with quick-turn concept models and drawings.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Drafting, Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- 3+ years of CAD drafting experience in a manufacturing environment, producing drawings that parts were actually built from.
- Proficiency in SolidWorks or comparable 3D parametric CAD, including sheet metal and weldment tools; working 2D AutoCAD skills.
- Solid command of GD&T, drawing standards, and tolerance stack-up fundamentals.
- Hands-on experience maintaining BOMs and processing engineering changes in an ERP/MRP system.
- Ability to read, interpret, and correct engineering drawings, and to communicate clearly with both engineers and production technicians.
Preferred Qualifications
- Automotive, vehicle body, or transportation equipment experience.
- Experience working with OEM chassis CAD data and packaging within a defined vehicle envelope.
- PDM/PLM experience (SolidWorks PDM or similar) and formal release management.
- Cut-file preparation for CNC, laser, or router equipment.
- Electrical harness or schematic drafting experience.
- Startup or new-product-launch experience: comfort producing drawings while the product is still stabilizing.
Competencies
- Precision - drawings are complete, dimensioned, and buildable the first time; errors are caught at their desk, not at the station.
- Configuration discipline - treats revision control as sacred; no one ever builds from a stale drawing on their watch.
- Floor connection - checks drawings against real parts and real builds, not just the model tree.
- Responsiveness - treats the production floor as a customer; redlines and questions never age.
- Communication - explains design intent plainly to technicians and translates floor feedback into clean engineering changes.
Success in the First 12 Months
- 90 days: Owns the drawing release and ECO process end to end. Knows the current drawing set, its gaps, and the chassis configurations in production.
- 6 months: Redline backlog is cleared and stays cleared. Drawing standards are documented and applied. BOMs for active models reconcile to how the floor actually builds.
- 12 months: The complete drawing package for every active model is current to as-built condition, and production, purchasing, and quality all pull from it as the single source of truth.
Physical & Work Environment
Role is based on-site at an active manufacturing facility, primarily office-based with daily time on the production floor verifying parts, fits, and builds. PPE is required in designated areas. Minimal travel.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary range: $75,000 to $90,000, commensurate with experience
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage
- Paid time off and holidays; professional training and certification support
