Summary
Hamilton Urban Core is a thriving inner-city health Centre and a leader in the provision of high-quality primary health care services and health promotion programs. As an inner-city health Centre, we work alongside individuals and families experiencing chronic and complex health and social challenges, including poverty, housing insecurity, mental health concerns, and barriers to accessing care. The Volunteer functions as a valued member of the Hamilton Urban Core Community Health Centre team and supports the delivery of respectful, client-centered services that promote dignity, accessibility, and belonging.
Volunteer Responsibilities
Reception Support:
- Welcome clients, community members, and visitors in a respectful, inclusive, and professional manner
- Respond to general inquiries and provide information regarding available programs and services
- Support administrative duties including filing, organizing materials, data entry, and maintaining reception spaces
- Assist staff with appointment reminders and supporting client flow throughout the Centre
- Maintain client confidentiality and uphold professional boundaries at all times
Kitchen Support:
- Assist with basic food preparation and kitchen organization in accordance with food safety practices
- Support meal, snack, and beverage distribution programs
- Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of kitchen, dining, and shared community spaces
- Assist with stocking supplies and notifying staff of inventory needs
- Contribute to creating a welcoming and respectful environment for all clients accessing food programs
Shower and Laundry Support:
- Support clients accessing hygiene and laundry services in a respectful, compassionate, and non-judgmental manner
- Assist with maintaining clean, organized, and accessible shower and laundry spaces
- Monitor supplies and communicate replenishment needs to staff
- Promote a safe, welcoming, and dignified environment for individuals accessing services
- Work within a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, and harm reduction framework
Qualifications and Skills
The successful volunteer will demonstrate:
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and relationship-building skills
- A compassionate, reliable, and collaborative approach to supporting community members
- The ability to work respectfully and effectively with diverse populations
- Understanding of anti-racism, anti-oppression, harm reduction, trauma-informed, and culturally safer practices
- Ability to maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and appropriate boundaries
- Comfort working both independently and collaboratively within an interprofessional and multidisciplinary team environment
- Basic computer proficiency, including familiarity with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Previous volunteer, community, or customer service experience is considered an asset
Additional Responsibilities
- Work closely with the Consumption and Treatment Service Client and Administrative Support team to assist with documentation and information sharing as appropriate
- Support the overall operations of the Centre in alignment with organizational values and community-focused care
Commitment
This is a part-time volunteer opportunity requiring availability approximately 2–3 days per week, Monday through Friday, based on program needs and volunteer availability.
