Job Description

Position Summary:

Working under the direction of the Facility Manager/Safety Officer, the Facility Maintenance Worker performs assigned repairs, preventive maintenance, inspections, equipment support, and facility improvement tasks throughout Tule River Indian Health Center Inc and it’s locations. This position helps maintain a safe, dependable, clean, and welcoming healthcare environment while minimizing disruption to patient care and clinic operations. The Facilities Maintenance Worker must communicate professionally with staff, patients, contractors, and visitor and remain sensitive to the needs, cultures, traditions, and values of the Indian community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs only work orders, repairs, projects, and other tasks assigned or authorized by the Facilities Manager/Safety Officer.
  2. Receives assigned work orders, evaluates the work area, gathers required tools and materials, provides progress updates, and records completion, unresolved issues, and follow-up needs.
  3. Conduct routine facility rounds and promptly report unsafe conditions, damage, leaks, unusual equipment operations, access concerns, and other maintenance needs.
  4. Performs preventive maintenance according to established schedules and maintains accurate service, inspection, and equipment records.
  5. Completes routine repairs involving plumbing fixtures, faucets, toilets, drains, doors, locks, walls, ceilings, flooring, furniture, shelving, paint, signage, and other building components within the employee's training and authorization.
  6. Assists with basic maintenance of lighting, electrical fixtures, HVAC filters, exhaust fans, water fountains, time clocks, backup-generator components, and similar systems; refers work beyond the employee's training, authorization, or legal scope to the Facilities Manager/Safety Officer.
  7. Troubleshoots facility and equipment problems using safe work practices, manufacturer instructions, and approved procedures, and clearly reports findings and recommended next steps.
  8. Installs, assembles, relocations, and secures approved furniture, equipment, fixtures, dispensers, wall-mounted items, and safety signage.
  9. Helps coordinate facility access for contractors and vendors, observes work areas for safety and operational concerns, and reports progress or deficiencies to the Facilities Manager/Safety Officer.
  10. Uses barriers, warning signs, floor protection, dust-control measures, and other safeguards to protect patients, staff, visitors, and clinic operations during maintenance work.
  11. Maintains hand tools, power tools, ladders, carts, vehicles, and maintenance equipment in safe working order and reports damaged or missing items immediately.
  12. Maintains an organized maintenance shop and appropriate inventory of parts, filters, hardware, supplies, and approved chemicals; notifies the Facilities Manager/Safety Officer when items require replenishment.
  13. Reads and follows Safety Data Sheets, equipment manuals, infection-prevention requirements, personal protective equipment requirements, and TRIHCI safety policies.
  14. Complies with fire and life-safety procedures, lockout/tagout requirements when trained and authorized, emergency response procedures, and all applicable workplace-safety requirements.
  15. Works carefully in or near patient-care and staff work areas, protects confidential information, maintains professional boundaries, and limits disruption, noise, dust, odors, and blocked access.
  16. Assists with deliveries, storage, room arrangements, furniture moves, and approved on-site or off-site event setups as assigned.
  17. Monitors for signs of pests, documents and reports activity, and assists with vendor coordination. Pesticides may be applied only when the employee is trained, authorized, and all applicable requirements have been satisfied.
  18. Provides limited custodial or grounds support during staffing shortages, emergencies, and special projects as assigned; the primary function of this position remains facility maintenance.
  19. Responds promptly to urgent facility needs during assigned hours and may be required to assist with after-hours emergencies in accordance with TRIHCI policy.
  20. Immediately reports injuries, incidents, property damage, spills, security concerns, and hazards to the Facilities Manager/Safety Officer and follows required reporting procedures.
  21. Participates in required training, drills, inspections, staff meetings, and department planning activities.
  22. Other duties as assigned.

Additional Responsibilities may include:

  1. Assisting with special facility projects, renovations, equipment installations, and improvement work.
  2. Supporting supply distribution, linen movement, recycling, waste-handling coordination, and other operational needs.
  3. Performing basic recordkeeping, email, work-order updates, inventory tracking, and other general office duties related to Facilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. Working knowledge of common building-maintenance practices, materials, tools, and safety precautions.
  2. Basic skill in one or more maintenance areas such as plumbing, carpentry, painting, drywall, grounds work, mechanical equipment, or general repair.
  3. Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, ladders, carts, and related maintenance equipment.
  4. Ability to inspect, troubleshoot, and identify when a problem can be safely corrected in-house or must be referred to a qualified contractor.
  5. Ability to read and follow written work orders, equipment instructions, labels, Safety Data Sheets, preventive-maintenance schedules, and basic plans or diagrams.
  6. Ability to plan daily work, organize materials, manage multiple assignments, and complete tasks accurately within established priorities and deadlines.
  7. Ability to maintain clear records and provide timely verbal and written updates regarding work status, parts, safety concerns, and contractor needs.
  8. Ability to work independently while following the direction, priorities, and approval requirements established by the Facilities Manager/Safety Officer.
  9. Ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with supervisors, staff, patients, visitors, contractors, and individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  10. Ability to work in an active healthcare environment while protecting privacy, maintaining professional conduct, and minimizing disruption to patient care.
  11. Basic computer literacy and ability to use email, Microsoft Windows, and electronic work-order or inventory systems.
  12. Dependability, attention to detail, sound judgment, initiative, teamwork, and commitment to safe, high-quality work.

Requirements:

  1. Possess a valid California Driver’s License, provide an updated DMV printout upon hire, maintain a good driving record, and remain insurable with the Tule River Indian Health Center Inc, insurance agency.
  2. Successfully pass required pre-employment drug and alcohol testing, background check, physical examination and TB screening.
  3. Maintain a professional appearance, attitude, and level of conduct appropriate for a healthcare setting.
  4. Complete all requires TRIHCI safety, infection-prevention, emergency- response, equipment, and job-specific training.
  5. Possess valid First Aid/ CPR certification at the BLCS level or maintain certification within three months of hire.
  6. Work with established schedule an adjust hours when operational needs, approved projects, or emergencies require.
  7. Preference in hiring is given to qualified American Indians in accordance with the Indian Preference Act (Title 25, U.S. Code, Sections 472 and 473). Applicants claiming Indian Preference must submit Indian verification certified by the Tribe of Affiliation or other acceptable documentation of Indian heritage.

Education and/or Experience

  1. High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate required.
  2. At least one year of general maintenance, construction, repair, facilities, grounds, custodial, or related hands-on experience preferred. A combination of relevant training and experience may be considered.
  3. Experience in healthcare, tribal, public-service, or similarly regulated facility is preferred but not required.
  4. Trade coursework, OSHA training, equipment certifications, or other maintenance -related credentials are preferred.
  5. Experience using work-order, preventative- maintenance, inventory, or building-management systems preferred.

Qualifications and Contingencies:

1. Employment is contingent upon maintaining all required licenses, clearances, screenings, and insurability.

2. The employee must remain qualified and authorized before performing regulated, licensed, or higher-risk work, including pesticide application, specialized electrical work, and other tasks requiring specific training or credentials.

3. The employee must immediately disclose any condition affecting the ability to safely operate a TRIHCI vehicle, use assigned equipment, or perform the essential functions of the position.

Physical Work Environment

The conditions described below are representative of those in which the Facilities Maintenance Worker performs the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work is performed throughout the health center and other assigned TRIHCI locations, both indoors and outdoors. The employee may work near patients, staff, contractors, vehicles, mechanical equipment, cleaning products, dust, odor, noise, temperature changes, wet or uneven surfaces, and other conditions common to maintenance work. Required personal protective equipment and established safety controls must be used.

  1. Stand, walk, sit, bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, twist, and climb ladders or stairs for varying periods.
  2. Use hands and arms to handle tools, controls, materials, equipment, fasteners, and small components with sufficient coordination and dexterity.
  3. Lift, carry, push, pull, and move materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds independently and use team lifting or mechanical assistance for heavier or awkward items.
  4. Safely operate hand tools, power tools, ladders, carts, and assigned vehicles or equipment.
  5. Possess sufficient visual acuity to inspect work, read labels and instructions, recognize hazards, and use computer or mobile-device screens.
  6. Possess sufficient hearing and speech capability to communicate in person, by telephone, and by radio and to recognize alarms, equipment sounds, and warnings.
  7. Work in confined or elevated areas only when trained, authorized, properly equipped, and permitted by applicable procedures.
