Research Scientist

Med-Neurology - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (26005827)

The University of Pittsburgh, Department of Neurology, would like to hire a Research Scientist. We are seeking applications for an upcoming project investigating divergent and convergent mechanisms of Parkinson’s disease following exposure to disease relevant environmental toxicants. The successful candidate will be expected to design and carry out properly powered in vitro assays using various cell lines under direct supervision of the PI. The candidate will also be expected to analyze / graph data and prepares data figures and assist in grant writing. Interact closely with all lab members. This candidate will receive on the job training though prior cell culture experience and invivo handling is preferred. Tasks the scientist will perform include, cell culture maintenance, live imaging microscopy, RTqPCR, and western blotting.


Job Summary

Conducts independent scientific research projects from inception to presentation. Prepares and crafts various documentations of research results into manuscripts, proposals, grant applications, and presentations. Trains undergraduates and research technicians. Manages laboratory policies and coordinates project development in collaboration with other specialists.


Essential Functions

RS performs assays and keeps apprised of technical innovations and implement new techniques when appropriate. RS analyzes and graphs data generated by themselves or others in the lab, prepares data figures and illustrations for presentations and publications, and

presents data at lab meetings and conferences. RS also writes manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals, writes scientific abstracts for conferences, and assists in grant proposal writing. RS reviews literature and keeps the laboratory reference database updated. RS interacts closely with the PI, supervises and trains technicians and undergraduate students in the lab, and communicates with collaborators. Knowledge of in vivo rodent work, molecular biology (generating new plasmids, cell lines, sh/siRNA, CRISPR Cas9 technologies), cell culture (cell line, maintenance and engineering), resonant scanning confocal microscopy, live imaging microscopy are essential. Experience preferred in mitochondrial specific assays (eg. Seahorse), RTqPCR, Western Blotting, in situ proximity ligation, development of plate reader assays.
