Hearing Screener

  • Position Summary
    • Performs newborn hearing screens with appropriate documentation following all hospital and departmental procedures and policies for infection control and prevention and safety. Ensuring hearing screenings and documentation are in accordance with Iowa law, EHDI (Early Hearing Detection and Intervention) best practices for quality assurance, Joint Committee on Infant Hearing (JCIH) guidelines, and MGMC Newborn Hearing Screening Program’s policies and procedures. Provides education to parents regarding relevance of screening and early intervention as well as describing testing procedures, results, next steps, and follow-up care as needed.

  • Position Responsibilities

    • Unit Specific Position Responsibilities
      • Performs newborn hearing screenings in accordance with departmental competencies and state Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) requirements.
      • Demonstrates knowledge of audiological screening techniques for newborns in well-baby and NICU settings.
      • Documents screening results accurately in the medical record and in the state newborn screening database (OZ).
      • Schedules and performs outpatient hearing screenings and assists with referrals to diagnostic audiology centers as needed.
      • Assists the coordinator with equipment troubleshooting, maintenance, supply inventory, and quality assurance activities.
      • Provides screening results and education to parents and responds to questions from families and healthcare staff.
      • Supports compliance with Iowa EHDI laws and participates in review of screening metrics and performance indicators.
      • Screens eligible readmitted infants under one month of age in accordance with program guidelines.
      • Interacts with clinics and community providers to obtain necessary information for state reporting and follow-up.
      • Maintains a safe, clean, and organized work environment.
      • Performs patient transport and positioning within scope of role.
      • Supports day-to-day unit operations and performs other duties as assigned.
      • Participates in departmental meetings, staff development, and orientation of new staff.
      • Utilizes effective communication practices, including handoff communication at shift change.
      • Upholds safety practices and contributes to a therapeutic environment for patients, families, visitors, and staff.
      • Operates office and screening equipment as trained and maintains unit educational materials and documents.
      • Functions within the scope of practice as defined by Iowa law.
      • Performs other assigned duties.
  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
    • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
      • At least 18 years of age.
      • Highschool diploma or GED.
      • Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
      • Access to state EHDI database system within 30 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
      • Maintain mandatory reporter certification throughout employment.
    • Organizational Requirements:
      • Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.
    • Preferred Qualifications:
      • Obtain Newborn Screening Curriculum Certificate from the National Center of Hearing Assessment & Management within 90 days of hire.
      • One year experience with the infant/pediatric population or in a hearing or speech related field.
    • Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
      • Skill in effective oral and written communication in English.
