AILA's mission is to promote justice, advocate for fair and reasonable immigration law and policy, advance the quality of immigration and nationality law and practice, and support the professional development of its members. Headquartered in Washington, DC, AILA provides continuing legal education, policy resources, and advocacy leadership through its national network of chapters and committees.

About the Team

AILA's Marketing and Business Development Department drives AILA's brand, membership growth, and non-dues revenue strategy. Its marketing function identifies and acts on member needs to shape campaigns, communications, and the overall member experience, while its business development function builds revenue through exhibitor, sponsorship, and partnership relationships across AILA's conferences and programs. Together, these functions grow membership, diversify revenue, and strengthen the value of AILA membership.

About the Role

The Senior Manager, Membership Marketing leads the marketing strategy and execution for membership acquisition, engagement, and retention at AILA, owning the end-to-end lifecycle marketing approach for membership. This position converts business objectives into data-driven campaigns across email, web, and digital channels to enhance retention, renewal, and member engagement. The role partners closely with the Membership, Product, and Marketing teams, and manages one or more staff members.

What You'll Do

Drive Membership Growth & Retention

  • Translate business goals into clear lifecycle strategies and marketing plans
  • Focus on improving renewal rates, reducing churn, and increasing lifetime value

Lead Lifecycle Marketing Programs

  • Build and optimize scalable lifecycle campaigns, including onboarding, engagement, renewal, winback, and reactivation
  • Plan and execute integrated campaigns across email, web, and digital channels
  • Own campaign calendars, timelines, and execution from concept through launch

Leverage Data & Experimentation

  • Analyze engagement trends and churn drivers to inform strategy and priorities
  • Implement testing frameworks (A/B testing, control groups) to measure impact and improve performance
  • Track and report on key metrics, including retention, renewal, and campaign effectiveness

Segment & Personalize the Member Experience

  • Develop audience segmentation strategies based on behavior, tenure, and engagement
  • Deliver targeted, relevant messaging across lifecycle stages
  • Continuously improve personalization and communication effectiveness

Partner Cross-Functionally

  • Collaborate closely with Membership to improve the end-to-end member experience
  • Align with Product and other teams on strategy, messaging, and execution

Test and Scale New Approaches

  • Evaluate and pilot new channels and tactics (e.g., SMS, push) to increase engagement
  • Support go-to-market strategy for new or evolving membership offerings

What You'll Bring

  • 7+ years of experience in B2C subscription or membership marketing, with a focus on retention and lifecycle marketing
  • A proven track record of improving retention, renewal rates, and reducing churn
  • Strong experience with marketing automation platforms (HubSpot preferred)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategy and execute campaigns end-to-end
  • A data-driven mindset, with experience using analytics and testing to optimize performance
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple competing priorities

Also valuable:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing
  • Experience in legal services or membership organizations
  • Prior people management experience

Location and Travel

This position is fully remote and does not include regularly scheduled in-office days or a requirement to be based in the Washington, DC area. AILA maintains a remote workforce strategy designed to support collaboration, organizational connection, and operational efficiency. As part of that approach, preference may be given to candidates located in the Washington, DC area or near a major airport to support occasional travel and in-person organizational activities.

Occasional travel may be required for conferences, member events, organizational meetings, or other business needs. Some travel may include overnight or weekend stays and, depending on the role, may involve domestic or international travel. Advance notice will generally be provided when possible.

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range provided reflects a reasonable estimate of the annual salary based on AILA's commitment to equitable and market-competitive pay. The actual salary offered will depend on several factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, years of experience, certifications or professional licenses, job-related skills, internal equity, and business needs.

Our compensation structure is based on industry-specific market data for similar-sized nonprofit organizations. Typically, individuals are hired at or near the starting point of the salary range for their role. Compensation decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, considering the unique facts and circumstances of each applicant.

Additionally, full-time and part-time employees working at least 20 hours per week on a regular basis are eligible to participate in AILA's comprehensive benefits program, which includes medical, dental, and vision insurance, an employee assistance program, a 401(k) retirement savings plan with matching contributions after 3 months of employment, generous paid time off, paid parental leave, professional development opportunities, and employer-paid life insurance and disability benefits.

Application Process

To ensure a complete application, all candidates must submit the required materials, including a resume and cover letter, through our application portal. As part of our interview process, candidates may be asked to participate in virtual interviews, which will require on-camera presence.

We are committed to creating an inclusive and accessible interview experience. If you require accommodations due to a disability or sincerely held religious beliefs—such as an alternative format or assistance during the interview—please let us know in advance, and we will make every effort to support your needs.

Eligibility to Work

In compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, we are required to hire only individuals who are authorized to work in the United States. Applicants selected for employment will need to provide documentation verifying their eligibility to work in the U.S. without the need for employer sponsorship. AILA participates in E-Verify to confirm work authorization. For more information on E-Verify, please visit dhs.gov/E-Verify.
