POSITION SUMMARY:
In accordance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory standards, the Mammography Technologist I performs screening and diagnostic mammography procedures under the direction of a Radiologist and Facility Manager, following established ACR, FDA, and departmental protocols. This position applies foundational mammography skills to produce high quality 2D and 3D breast imaging for diagnostic interpretation. The technologist is responsible for appropriate patient positioning, radiation safety, equipment operation, and accurate documentation. The Mammography Technologist I works with supervision in complex situations but is able to independently perform basic procedures, provide compassionate patient care, and maintain compliance with regulatory standards. The role supports daily workflow, assists with quality control tasks, and contributes to a safe and patient focused imaging environment. Performs job duties in accordance with the mission, vision and values of CCSF.
CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs routine mammography procedures following established protocols.
- Confirms exam orders match the requested procedure and documents relevant symptoms or indications.
- Positions and immobilizes patients using proper technique to obtain consistent, diagnostic breast images.
- Adjusts exposure factors, utilizes 2D/3D imaging capabilities, and ensures proper equipment setup.
- Reviews images for positioning, clarity, and completeness; repeats images as necessary.
- Applies radiation protection techniques, adheres to regulatory standards (ACR, FDA, MQSA), and maintains a safe environment.
- Ensures correct exam labeling, updates billing/exam titles when necessary, and prepares prior studies for radiologist review.
- Explains procedures, answers questions, and helps reduce patient anxiety during imaging.
- Performs routine QC tasks, reports equipment issues, and maintains appropriate supply levels.
- Maintains accurate documentation in the EMR/RIS/PACS systems.
- Maintains clean exam rooms, assists colleagues as needed, and completes other assigned tasks to support workflow.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Associate’s Degree in Radiologic Technology (minimum requirement)
- Graduate of an accredited radiography program
REQUIRED CERTIFICATES, LICENSE OR REGISTRATION:
- Florida Radiologic Technologist License
- ARRT Registered (Radiography) – required
- ARRT Mammography Certification – preferred
- BLS Certification (American Heart Association) – required
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS OR ABILITIES:
- Understanding of routine screening and diagnostic mammography techniques, including 2D and 3D imaging.
- Ability to apply proper positioning techniques to ensure consistent and high quality imaging of breast tissue.
- Understanding of ACR, MQSA, FDA, and departmental safety requirements to ensure patient and staff protection.
- Ability to position patients, adjust technical factors, operate mammography units, and review images for diagnostic acceptability.
- Ability to explain procedures, alleviate anxiety, provide emotional support, and ensure a positive patient experience
- Capacity to manage workflow, verify orders, update PACS information, and follow departmental procedures with attention to detail.
