Role Overview

To provide the care and support necessary to enable the people supported to lead fulfilling, meaningful and purposeful lives with attention to medical needs. Medical Support Professional (MSP) provides person-centered support based on the individual’s needs, preferences, and choices. MSPs perform a wide variety of tasks and activities based on the valued outcomes of each person they work with and reflecting the specific skills and the abilities of each individual. MSPs encourage, guide, and offer training to develop daily living skills, ensuring personal needs are met, promoting active engagement in community life and ensuring health and safety. MSPs create a positive and enriching program environment for all persons supported. Medical Support Professionals are a vital member of each person’s support team. MSPs are expected to know, understand, and live the Code of Ethics.

Key Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive oversight and support to residents regarding medical, clinical, behavioral, and safety needs:

• Maintain all required New York State certifications to administer medications, including insulin, and provide first aid as needed.

• Schedule, accompany, and support residents at medical and clinical appointments, ensuring appropriate follow-up and documentation.

• Maintain accurate medication records, complete weekly medication and first-aid supply inventories, and coordinate timely reordering and pharmacy pickups.

• Monitor residents’ medical conditions and medications, communicate changes in medical status to Nursing, and follow all clinical recommendations.

• Respond appropriately to medical emergencies and obtain necessary medical treatment while adhering to agency policies and procedures.

• Complete and maintain required medical and clinical documentation, including appointment forms, medication records, health tracking, and best possible health information in Foothold.

• Ensure required medical and clinical tracking is completed and participate in monthly medical audits and other quality assurance activities.

• Participate in mandatory medical, clinical, behavioral, and safety trainings and support Management and Nursing with staff training initiatives.

• Participate in staff meetings, significant meetings, and other team discussions; provide timely updates and relevant input regarding residents’ needs and progress.

• Follow individualized behavior support plans, maintain knowledge of residents’ behavioral and safety needs, and model appropriate, respectful, and positive behavior.

• Communicate effectively, professionally, and respectfully—both verbally and in writing—with residents, families, coworkers, supervisors, healthcare providers, and community partners.

Required Qualifications

High School Diploma or Equivalency Diploma; Preferred Six months work experience with individuals with I/DD. Willingness to continue to develop professional skills and educational opportunities. Must be cleared through a Criminal Background Check and Fingerprinting by Justice Center, MHLS, and OCFS; must acquire and maintain mandatory training as required (AMAP, SCIP, CPR, and First Aid); must possess and maintain a valid Driver’s License (NYS Preferred) (except for Community Habilitation Services).

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday at assigned location. Work hours options are 8:00 am - 4:00 pm or 9:00am to 5:00pm.
