Position Purpose:
The House Administrator is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of clinical units within Mount Sinai Hospital. Working closely with unit managers and the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer, the House Administrator ensures units and caregivers run effectively, conflicts are resolved, and policies are followed. The House Administrator is expected to be knowledgeable in both clinical skills to act as a resource during clinical code responses, but also in hospital operations including emergency incident management. The House Administrator will demonstrate contributions to compliance, education, leadership, and a patient-centric environment across the hospital.
- Ensures appropriate delivery of care
- Manages emergencies and disasters in the absence of a full incident management team
- Ensures compliance with hospital policies, Joint Commission and Department of Health requirements in daily hospital operations
- Functions independently within scope of practice
- Utilizes interpersonal skills to resolve conflicts
- Utilizes clinical knowledge to provide leadership during clinical decision making
This position reports to the Assistant Chief Nursing Officer. It provides supervision to Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, Certified Nurse Assistants, Student Nurse Assistants, Trauma Techs, Paramedics, Unit Secretary(s) and Staffing Coordinator(s).
Key Job Activities:
Clinical
- Conducts comprehensive clinical rounds to patient care areas at least twice per shift to assess the performance of patient care by nursing staff members.
- Assesses personnel issues and operational systems to promote quality patient care.
- Assists clinical staff in direct/indirect care as needed to assure quality patient care delivery.
- Serves as a resource to staff and promotes clinical collaboration among nursing care units.
- Assists staff to establish appropriate priorities for patient care and to make adequate decisions relative to patient care.
- Uses clinical and educational expertise and/or resources in decision making and through interactions with staff.
- Assumes leadership role in Code Blue situations by providing direction to team members, utilizing ACLS and PALS certifications.
- Reviews staffing complement at beginning of shift to assure adequacy in terms of amount of staff and skill mix of staff relative to patient requirements.
- Re-distributes staff as necessary according to Departmental guidelines.
- Receives staff call offs from the units. Assists to adjust staffing as needed resulting from call offs.
- Accurately documents actual staffing levels and records changes as they occur during the shift.
Leadership
- Investigates occurrences related to patient care, personnel or operations. Uses appropriate problem solving skills to resolve issues. Communicates actions to appropriate leaders.
- Uses proactive problem solving to identify organizational system issues and affect change through alternative solutions.
- Provides feedback through change of shift report, and written/verbal communication to first line managers on factors that contribute to or deter from effective patient care.
- Promotes a collaborative work environment which supports staff and managers to facilitate change and promote quality patient care.
- Supports the managerial development of charge nurses and Clinical Care Coordinators.
- Provides formal written information to first line managers as needed/requested regarding performance appraisals of permanent evening/night shift staff.
- Coaches, counsels, and disciplines staff as necessary to assure compliance to standards.
- Solicits input from staff members regarding staffing needs for patient care delivery. Allocates staff resources to assure optimal care. Holds staff accountable for their decisions.
- Provides feedback and direction to staffing coordinators.
- Provides administrative leadership for staff within hospital departments without direct supervision.
- Interacts appropriately with the media protecting patient rights and confidentiality.
- Communicates pertinent information to the necessary parties during codes. Activates HICS when appropriate and assigns roles to appropriate parties.
- Meets regularly with Assistant Chief Nursing Officer to discuss operational and personnel issues.
- Contributes to nursing and hospital operations through active committee/meeting participation.
- Serves as a role model who exemplifies the principles of Customer Service. Holds staff accountable and responsible for a customer service approach to patient care. Provides written commendation of staff who demonstrate consistent customer service attitudes.
- Completes yearly self-evaluation which demonstrates insight into strengths and areas for professional development.
Education
- Completes mandatory educational/competency validation and health safety requirements.
- Collaborates with nursing leadership to identify educational needs of staff. Supports implementation strategies to meet those needs.
- Maintains current BLS/ACLS certifications to provide leadership in Code Blue and Rapid Response scenarios.
- Provides formal and informal teaching to staff. Participates in departmental training sessions.
- Maintains current National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS.100, 200, 700 certifications to appropriately perform the duties of Incident Commander in the Hospital Incident Management Team.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Work Experience:
- Graduate of an approved school of nursing
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Previous clinical experience within a hospital or health care setting required. Managerial experience preferred.
- Recent ED/ICU experience or recent code experience as bedside RN
Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience in EPIC and MEDITECH software systems preferred.
Certifications/Licenses:
- BLS
- ACLS
Currently registered as a professional nurse in the state of Illinois
