Job Description
Position Summary
The Supervisor of Clinical Engineering manages the day-to-day operations of the healthcare technology and medical device systems across the organization. Reporting directly to the CIO, this role bridges the gap between hospital executives and frontline technical staff. The Supervisor is responsible for ensuring continuous service excellence, regulatory compliance (including Joint Commission standards), financial stewardship, and the continuous professional development of the clinical engineering team.
Areas of Oversight Summary
1. Leadership & Team Development
Personnel Management: Oversee staffing, scheduling, and workload distribution for technicians to ensure continuous, high-quality service delivery.
Talent Development: Identify training needs, mentor senior technicians and junior supervisors, provide honest and timely performance feedback, and constructively address performance gaps.
Culture Carrier: Cultivate an environment built on mutual respect, collaboration, and open communication; motivate the team through active praise, recognition, and rewards.
Change Management: Guide team members through operational changes, leaning on technical credibility and industry best practices to drive adoption.
2. Operations Management & Regulatory Compliance
Regulatory Readiness: Lead and direct Joint Commission, local, and federal inspections. Ensure all performance assurance inspections are meticulously documented and that regulatory alerts are handled immediately.
MEMP Administration: Administer the Medical Equipment Management Plan (MEMP) to satisfy key safety and operational performance measures.
KPI & Metric Tracking: Manage site-wide Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), including Preventative Maintenance (PM) compliance, Work Order Turnaround (WOT), and work order approvals. Provide routine performance metrics to the CIO.
Continuous Improvement: Monitor site metrics to identify operational variances. Perform root-cause analysis on process failures and execute immediate corrective actions to bring operations back to standard.
Inventory & Logistics: Maintain an accurate stockroom and supply database; oversee the execution of the mandatory annual asset and parts inventory.
3. Account Management, Strategy & Finance
Financial Stewardship: Hold local Profit and Loss (P&L) responsibility. Perform financial analyses, build tactical budgets, and monitor labor and parts costs (in-house vs. contract).
Vendor & Contract Management: Evaluate and manage external service contracts and vendor resources to maximize cost-efficiency and equipment uptime.
Executive Alignment: Deliver Quarterly Value Reviews (QVRs) and system-level strategic reports to executive leadership.
Strategic Growth: Formulate local operational strategies, collaborate with diverse customer bases, and identify opportunities for the strategic expansion of clinical engineering services.
Qualifications
•Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering, Electronics, a related technological field, Tech lead experience or equivalent combined technical experience.
•Preferred Certifications: Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET), Certified Radiology Equipment Specialist (CRES), Certified Laboratory Equipment Specialist (CLES), Certified Clinical Engineer (CCE), or CompTIA A+.
•Minimum of 3 years working in a clinical engineering or healthcare technology environment with proven business acumen.
•Minimum of 2 years in a direct people-management or supervisory role (prior experience as an Assistant CE Manager or Lead Tech is highly preferred).
•Deep familiarity with Medical Device Maintenance & Repair, Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS), Regulatory Compliance standards, and ISO policies.
•Ability to travel locally between healthcare system accounts/sites based on business needs.
