Overview
The Social Worker provides comprehensive case management and social services support to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA), Rocky Mountain Regional Office, Northern Cheyenne Agency. This role supports Child Welfare, Child Protection Services, Adult Protection Services, and Individual Indian Monies (IIM) case management programs to ensure effective service delivery in accordance with the Native American Child Safety Act. The position requires strong assessment, documentation, and coordination skills to support vulnerable populations, maintain compliance with federal and tribal regulations, and respond to emergent situations in a complex and fast-paced environment. The ideal candidate is highly organized, professional, and capable of making sound decisions while handling sensitive information, conducting fieldwork, and collaborating with multiple agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of clients.
Place of Performance/Hours of Operation
Bureau of Indian Affairs, Rocky Mountain Regional Office, Northern Cheyenne Agency 504 North Cheyenne Avenue Lame Deer, Montana 59043. Monday through Friday, between the hours of 6:30 am and 6:30 pm. The schedule requires emergency after hours on-call duty in the evenings, overnights, and weekends on a weekly rotating basis.
Summary of Responsibilities
The Social Worker will provide comprehensive case management and social services support to the Northern Cheyenne Agency to ensure effective program operations, regulatory compliance, and protection of at-risk populations. These services are essential to maintaining continuity of care, safeguarding children and vulnerable adults, and supporting agency coordination across tribal, federal, and community partners. Duties include, but are not limited to:
· Conducting interviews, assessments, home visits, and collateral contacts to evaluate safety, risk, and service needs; making professional determinations regarding child safety and coordinating interventions and placements as needed.
· Completing and managing all required documentation, including case files, applications, placements, court affidavits, and reports in accordance with legal and program requirements.
· Coordinating with law enforcement, courts, healthcare providers, and social service agencies, including filing petitions and providing testimony in tribal court proceedings.
· Managing case reporting timelines, submitting case notes and activity summaries, and maintaining accurate records within required systems (e.g., FASS-CMS) while ensuring confidentiality and compliance.
· Supporting transportation and coordination of client services, including medical screenings, placements, referrals, and emergency response activities.
· Participating in on-call rotations and responding to after-hours, weekend, and holiday emergencies as required.
· Integrating collected data, historical records, and investigative findings into comprehensive assessments to support case planning and service delivery.
Qualifications
The Social Worker shall have experience providing social services, case management, or protective services in a government, healthcare, or similarly regulated environment, preferably within tribal or underserved communities.
· Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related field required; Master’s degree in Social Work or related discipline preferred.
· Demonstrated experience in child welfare, adult protective services, case management, or related human services programs.
· Strong assessment, documentation, and decision-making skills in high-risk or sensitive environments.
· Experience preparing legal documentation and participating in court proceedings is preferred.
· Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, including tribal authorities, law enforcement, and service providers.
· Proficiency with case management systems and standard office software.
· Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
· Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information in compliance with federal laws and agency policies.
· Valid driver’s license and ability to travel, including transporting clients when required.
· Ability to pass required background investigations in accordance with the Native American Child Safety Act.
Security
Employment is contingent upon the ability to pass the pre-employment drug test and a federal security investigation (background check) in order to obtain a U.S. Department Health and Human Services Indian Health Service (HIS) Level 1, Security Clearance prior to start date. The background investigation reviews employment, criminal, financial, and personal history to ensure there are no outstanding violations.
