Principal Software Engineer, Marketplace

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Principal Software Engineer, Marketplace based in United States.

This is a high-impact technical leadership role responsible for defining the architecture and engineering strategy of a next-generation ecommerce platform. You will shape the digital journey connecting customers with vehicles, accessories, purchases, and ownership services. The scope spans product discovery, vehicle configuration, checkout, payments, order management, fulfillment, and marketplace capabilities. You’ll work closely with product and UX teams to create scalable, high-performance customer experiences while making critical technical trade-offs. The environment is fast-paced and entrepreneurial, with significant autonomy and ambiguity. This opportunity is ideal for a seasoned software leader who combines deep distributed-systems expertise with strong product judgment and a customer-first mindset.

Accountabilities:
  • Define, design, architect, implement, and deliver scalable software solutions supporting the digital commerce and marketplace ecosystem.
  • Establish technical direction and make complex architectural decisions across teams, balancing immediate delivery needs with long-term scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
  • Architect and evolve systems covering product discovery, vehicle configuration, cart and checkout, payments, order management, fulfillment, and related customer journeys.
  • Design and operate reliable distributed systems, APIs, web services, cloud infrastructure, and integrations with third-party platforms and SaaS providers.
  • Lead coding, testing, code reviews, design reviews, system testing, functional testing, and integration efforts while maintaining high standards for engineering quality.
  • Build and optimize modern ecommerce experiences, including integrations across product information management, commerce, payments, order management, and fulfillment systems.
  • Develop marketplace and multi-vendor capabilities while addressing the technical complexities associated with these models.
  • Partner with product and UX teams to create innovative, customer-focused applications and experiences that drive engagement and conversion.
  • Improve frontend performance and customer experience through practices such as Core Web Vitals optimization and conversion-focused engineering.
  • Evaluate technical decisions through a strong business lens, clearly communicating their potential impact on customers, operations, and the broader organization.
  • Simplify complex technical challenges through creativity, sound judgment, and pragmatic engineering approaches.
  • Serve as a trusted technical authority, advising engineering and business stakeholders on difficult technical and architectural trade-offs.
  • Mentor engineers and contribute to the technical and career development of the broader engineering community.
Requirements:
  • 12+ years of professional software development experience, with extensive experience building and operating scalable, customer-facing software systems.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership experience, including defining architecture, guiding engineering strategy, and driving complex technical decisions across multiple teams.
  • Deep experience designing and building reliable, scalable distributed systems, including APIs, web services, cloud infrastructure, and modern software architectures.
  • Strong understanding of modern ecommerce architectures, including headless or composable commerce approaches.
  • Hands-on experience integrating product catalog/PIM, cart and checkout, payment, order management, and fulfillment systems.
  • Experience integrating third-party platforms and SaaS products through APIs, events, webhooks, and other modern integration patterns.
  • Familiarity with marketplace or multi-vendor commerce models and the architectural challenges they introduce.
  • Experience building high-performance digital customer experiences, including frontend performance optimization, Core Web Vitals, and conversion-focused engineering.
  • Proven ability to operate effectively in ambiguous, fast-moving environments where requirements and priorities may evolve.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the ability to simplify complex problems and make thoughtful trade-offs.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to influence both technical and business stakeholders.
  • Strong customer orientation and business judgment, with the ability to connect technical decisions to measurable business and customer outcomes.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers, provide technical guidance, and contribute to the development of engineering talent.
