Lead Care. Shape the Future of Community Health.
Virginia Community Healthcare Association is seeking a Chief Medical Officer (CMO) to provide clinical leadership while continuing to care for patients in a mission-driven community health setting in the Hampton Roads area.
This role offers the opportunity to make an impact both in the exam room and across the organization. The CMO partners with the CEO, medical staff, and leadership team to advance high-quality, accessible care, strengthen clinical programs, and support providers and care teams.
What You'll Do
Clinical & Organizational Leadership
• Lead the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based primary care across SEVHS.
• Develop and improve clinical standards, protocols, quality initiatives, and patient safety practices.
• Lead quality improvement efforts and chair medical staff and quality-related committees.
• Advise the CEO and Board of Directors on clinical priorities and medical services.
• Mentor and support physicians and other clinical professionals.
• Promote continuing education, professional development, and a collaborative, team-based approach to care.
• Serve as Infection Control Coordinator and oversee infection prevention processes across all locations.
• Partner with operations to ensure appropriate medical equipment, clinical documentation, and regulatory requirements are maintained.
Community Health & Access
• Help shape clinical strategy around the needs of the communities.
• Strengthen partnerships with local and regional health resources to improve access and continuity of care.
• Support programs addressing the needs of underserved populations, including Ryan White Title I services and care for individuals living with HIV/AIDS.
• Champion patient-centered, coordinated care across medical, behavioral health, dental, and support services.
Direct Patient Care
The CMO will continue providing primary care approximately two days per week, including:
• Evaluating, diagnosing, and treating patients.
• Developing treatment plans and coordinating care.
• Ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic studies.
• Maintaining timely and accurate medical records.
• Participating in interdisciplinary care teams, case management, and preventive health initiatives.
• Maintaining professional competence through continuing medical education.
What We're Looking For
Education & Experience
• MD or DO from an accredited medical school with completion of an approved residency/internship program.
• Board certified or board eligible in a primary care specialty.
• Minimum 2 years of clinical practice experience.
• Experience in a community health center, FQHC, or underserved/community-based setting strongly preferred.
• Previous clinical leadership experience preferred.
Licensure
• Current Virginia medical license and DEA registration.
• Valid Virginia driver's license, insurance, and acceptable driving record.
Skills & Attributes
• Strong clinical judgment and leadership skills.
• Excellent communication and relationship-building abilities.
• Commitment to health equity, access to care, and community health.
• Ability to lead collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
• Commitment to patient privacy and HIPAA compliance.
This role is part of a broader effort to strengthen access to high-quality primary care across Virginia. Our approach is simple: support providers, build strong care teams, and ensure communities have access to the care they deserve.
