Definition: The NAT position is a unique position in which an individual who is attending CNA school can perform CNA tasks while attending school. The NAT position assists the professional nursing staff with the delivery of basic nursing care tasks, clerical, and support duties under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is a training position for the purposes of development into a Certified Nursing Assistant which may only serve as a NAT for four (4) months, and then must obtain

Essential Functions: (Performance of these functions is the reason the job exists. Assigned jobs/duties are not limited to the essential functions). Nursing Assistant in training may only be employed after 8 hrs of classroom contraction has been completed. Nursing Assistant in training may only perform duties in which they have been instructed and educated and must provide proof of those skills prior to performing. NAT may only be under the direct supervision of a Licensed Nurse. NAT may not work without a Certified Nursing Assistant present.

1. Provides for a resident’s personal hygiene as necessary including bedpans, urinals, baths, backrubs, shampoos and shaves, and assists with showers and whirlpool baths.
2. Provides for activities of daily living (ADLs) including meals and feeding, ambulation, turns and positioning of residents/patients, and providing fresh water and nourishment between meals.
3. Performs I&O, checks vital signs, weight, and post-mortem care.
4. Provides for comfort needs of residents.
5. Works effectively as a team member in the delivery of care.
6. Maintains a safe, clean, and attractive environment for residents/patients and coworkers.
7. Promptly responds to resident/patient call lights and requests.
8. Reports observations of residents to licensed nurses on duty to ensure professional assessment.
9. Shows dependability by being punctual and maintains consistent attendance.
10. Maintains good working relationships among all nursing unit personnel and other employees through appropriate communication.

Qualifications for Employment:

Qualifications for employment include the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform a job, which are generally demonstrated through qualifying experience, education, or training.

Knowledge of:

• Communication and interpersonal relationship responsibilities
• Safety and infection control policies and procedures.
• Personal care procedures.
• Procedures to take and record vital signs.
• Reporting responsibilities.
• Enrolled in a Approved Nursing Assistant training course

Ability to:

• Record information timely and accurately.
• Assist residents transfer and mobility using proper lifting and transfer techniques.
• Answer call lights.
• Monitor residents and report changes.
• Provide resident hygiene.
• Comply with facility safety policies and procedures.
• Comply with the Resident Bill of Rights.
• Work in an environment that has frequent and multiple interruptions, which may be stressful.
• Provide genuine care for residents

Dexterity, coordination, and vision to use a keyboard and video display terminal. Strength and stamina to bend, stoop, sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time. Some bending, reaching, squatting, and stooping is necessary. The manual dexterity and cognitive ability to perform procedures, care plans and tasks as assigned. The ability to communicate via telephone and in person. Mental stamina to deal with emotionally difficult situations. Moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds) and use of mechanical lifts as required or needed.

Required Certifications and Licenses:

Basic Cardiac Life Support Certification

Successful completion of an Approved Certified Nursing Assistant approved program

Must acquire certification within 4 months of employment
