Description:

The City of Greer is hiring a Mechanic III within Fleet Services.

Position Summary: City of Greer is seeking an experienced Emergency Vehicle Technician/Up-fitter to build and maintain our emergency services vehicles. Equipment being installed includes radios, video systems, radars, wireless modems, center consoles, fabricated metal components, lights, sirens, speakers, antennas, laptops, printers, consoles, transport partitions, K-9 Cages, and other electrical components and equipment. This will include working on new vehicles, upgrading existing vehicles, and decommissioned vehicles for auction. This position is also responsible for troubleshooting/repairing any issues with the equipment listed above as well as performing routine maintenance/repairs on all city vehicles/equipment.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Equipment being installed includes radios, video systems, radars, wireless modems, center consoles, fabricated metal components, lights, sirens, speakers, antennas, laptops, printers, consoles, transport partitions, K-9 Cages, other electrical components and equipment.
  • Custom installation of automotive products including public safety warning equipment, lighting, upgraded power supplies and inverters in police, fire, and other public safety vehicles
  • Interpret and create schematics
  • Properly install equipment on vehicles
  • Possess fabrication skills
  • Establish a proper workflow based on assigned tasks
  • Ability to communicate with shop personnel and managers, and work as a team
  • Drilling/cutting to properly mount equipment/components in or on vehicles
  • Fabricate brackets from aluminum and other material to mount/install equipment
  • Develop wiring routes throughout the vehicle for the most efficient wiring path and enable future replacement and/or troubleshooting
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose problems with equipment as necessary
  • Follow verbal/written instructions, drawings, and schematics for installation of components
  • The ability to disassemble and re-assemble the interior and exterior components required for up-fitting equipment on a wide range of vehicle makes and models, including sedans, SUVs, and Trucks.
  • Maintain safe, clean and orderly tools and work area
  • Continuous learning in new products, skills, techniques, etc.
  • Complete all required paperwork and documentation
  • Other duties as needed or required

Hours: Monday - Friday; 7:30 am - 3:30 pm; additional hours as needed.

Salary: Minimum $27.60 per hour, dependent on experience.

Requirements:

EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE - REQUIRED

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalency.
  • 1 to 3 years’ experience or training in automotive/electrical installation and/or repair.
  • Must have own tools and tool box.
  • Must successfully complete required courses and/or certifications that are deemed necessary by the City.
  • Must have the following skills: communication, problem-solving, detail orientation and teamwork/collaboration
  • Must be able to maintain a positive attitude while working under pressure in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be capable to prioritize multiple tasks effectively
  • Must be self-motivated and able to accomplish tasks with little supervision;
  • Must have basic computer knowledge
  • Must be comfortable sitting, standing and/or walking for long periods of time
  • Must possess a professional demeanor
  • Ability to work efficiently both independently or with a team
  • Ability to lift/move 50 pounds regularly and lift/move 100 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to work in, on, around, over and under vehicles in various stages of up-fitting for long periods of time
  • Must have the ability to use all hand tools, power tools, air tools and hydraulic tools as the job requires.
  • Must have the ability to use diagnostic equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Basic automotive mechanical skills (Also servicing vehicles when no up-fitting projects available)
  • Must have a valid state issued drivers’ license

EDUCATION, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE – PREFERRED

  • Five (5) years’ experience in emergency vehicle up-fitting
  • ASE Certification
  • Emergency Vehicle Technician Certificate
  • Automobile and Light Truck (A1-A9)
  • Automotive Electronic/Electrical Systems Certification (A6)
  • Truck Equipment (E1-E3)
  • Auto Maintenance and Light Repair (G1)
  • Advanced Engine Performance Specialists (L1)
  • Electronic Diesel Engine Diagnosis Specialist (L2)
  • Light Duty Hybrid/Electric Vehicle Specialist (L3)
  • Medium-Heavy Truck (T1-T8)
  • Two (2) year degree or certificate from Automotive Repair Trade School
  • Certified Ford Technician

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment) involves routine and frequent exposure to:

  • ­ Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
  • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
  • Extreme noise levels.
  • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
  • Traffic; Moving machinery.
  • Electrical shock; Heights.
