POSITION SUMMARY:
Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Serves as head lifeguard/shift supervisor as assigned by the Aquatics Director.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains constant surveillance of the pool area. Provides supervision of staff when management is not in the facility.
- Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area, and helps mentor lifeguards in rule enforcement and swim test administration.
- The position is identified as safety-sensitive and is subject to required random drug testing as scheduled.
- Performs assigned tasks or specific responsibilities in a supervisory/head lifeguard capacity as assigned by the Aquatics Director or supervisor.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Checks the pool for hazardous conditions upon arrival and throughout the shift; responds to and corrects hazards when able or reports immediately to a supervisor.
- Performs pool chemical testing at appropriate times of the day, as required, and takes appropriate action to correct inconsistencies.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or state Health Department codes.
- Attends monthly in-service training and YMCA mandatory staff meetings.
- Responsible for securing a substitute head lifeguard and reporting any schedule changes to the director in a timely manner.
- Adheres to all YMCA of Montclair policies, procedures, rules, regulations, and best practices, including emergency and safety procedures, supporting the association’s philanthropic efforts.
- Cooperates and interacts with members, staff, program participants, and volunteers in a professional, courteous, and friendly manner.
- Demonstrates and models the YMCA’s four core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect, and Responsibility.
- Adheres to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
- Attends required Abuse Risk Management training and adheres to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
- Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follows mandated abuse reporting procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Minimum age of 16
- Current YMCA Lifeguard or American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Certification required
- Current Basic Life Support (CPR), AED, First Aid, and Oxygen Administration certifications
- Must be able to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
- Must have CPR/AED and First Aid certification or obtain within 90 days of employment
- Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA or ARC standards
- Must complete Bloodborne Pathogens training annually
- Must maintain all required certifications in active status
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Ability to pass a lifeguard skills assessment and water test
- Must be able to remain alert at all times
- Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods
- Ability to hear noises and recognize distress signals
- Ability to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision
- Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks required for water rescue
- Ability to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situations.
- Ability to work indoors and outdoors (including exposure to heat, cold, humidity, and inclement weather conditions)
- Must be able to lift and pull up to 50 pounds

HOURLY PAY RATE: $16.13-$19.00
WORK SCHEDULE:
Weekdays: Evenings 4:00 PM – 9:00 PM
Weekends: 6:00 AM – 12:00 PM and 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM
