Summary/Objective

The Cloud Engineering Manager leads the organization's infrastructure engineering and support operations, overseeing cloud environments, security initiatives, and service desk functions. This role is responsible for driving modernization initiatives, infrastructure-as-code adoption, and automation strategies that reduce operational burden and increase system reliability. The ideal candidate will build and mentor engineering teams, improve observability and incident response capabilities, and align technology investments with business outcomes while managing relationships with managed service providers and technology vendors.

Core Responsibilities

  • Provide overall leadership and oversight for cloud infrastructure, on-prem systems, security operations, and the IT support desk.
  • Own Microsoft Azure strategy and day-to-day oversight, including identity, compute, networking, security, and monitoring.
  • Manage and prioritize work across infrastructure engineering, cloud services, endpoint management, and help desk operations.
  • Serve as the primary technical liaison with the Managed Service Provider (MSP), ensuring SLAs, performance metrics, and service quality are met.
  • Lead vendor management activities including contract review, renewals, cost optimization, and solution evaluations.
  • Oversee information security posture in partnership with internal stakeholders and third-party providers (MFA, patching, endpoint protection, monitoring).
  • Establish and enforce operational standards, documentation, and escalation procedures.
  • Drive automation and modernization initiatives using PowerShell, scripting, and cloud-native tooling to reduce manual workload.
  • Oversee incident response and problem management, including root-cause analysis and post-incident remediation.
  • Ensure high availability, disaster recovery, backup, and business continuity across all platforms.
  • Collaborate with leadership on technology roadmap planning, infrastructure investment decisions, and risk management.
  • Mentor and support technical staff; set expectations for performance, accountability, and professional growth.
  • Maintain visibility into infrastructure health through monitoring, reporting, and capacity planning.

Supervisory Responsibility

Direct supervision of Infrastructure Engineers and Support Desk staff. Responsible for hiring, training, performance management, and professional development of team members.

Physical Demands

Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as copy machine and computer printer. The person in this position frequently communicates with stakeholders; must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Full Time, Monday – Friday, 8am – 5pm EST. Hybrid Schedule. On-call responsibilities for critical incidents.

Travel

Minimal travel required; occasional travel to vendor sites or for training may be necessary.

Required Experience & Qualifications

  • 10+ years of progressive experience in IT infrastructure, cloud, and systems engineering roles.
  • 3+ years in a leadership or senior technical oversight role, managing infrastructure, operations, or service delivery.
  • Strong hands-on experience with Microsoft Azure (identity, compute, networking, security, monitoring).
  • Experience supporting hybrid environments (cloud and on-prem).
  • Proven ability to work effectively with managed service providers and external vendors.
  • Strong background in Windows Server, Active Directory, Microsoft 365, and endpoint management.
  • Demonstrated experience with automation and scripting (PowerShell strongly preferred).
  • Solid understanding of IT security best practices, compliance concepts, and risk mitigation.
  • Experience leading or participating in major incidents, infrastructure upgrades, and system migrations.
  • Strong documentation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Ability to balance hands-on technical depth with operational oversight and leadership responsibilities.

Preferred Experience

  • Azure certifications (AZ-104 or higher).
  • Experience with monitoring and observability tools (e.g., Azure Monitor, Sentinel, SolarWinds, Datadog).
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes, incident/problem/change management.
  • Prior experience in regulated or security-sensitive environments.
  • Experience modernizing legacy infrastructure into cloud-first or hybrid models.
