POSITION SUMMARY:
The Ophthalmic Scribe is responsible for accurately and efficiently documenting physician-patient encounters in real time, allowing the physician to focus on patient care. This role requires a strong understanding of ophthalmic terminology, exam procedures, and electronic health record (EHR) systems. The scribe works closely with the physician and clinical team to ensure accurate charting, improve workflow efficiency, and enhance the overall patient experience.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Accurately document patient history, exam findings, assessments, and treatment plans as dictated by the physician.
- Ensure completeness and accuracy of medical records in accordance with compliance standards.
- Input orders for diagnostic tests, prescriptions, and follow-up care as directed by the physician.
- Maintain knowledge of medical coding and documentation requirements to optimize billing accuracy and optimization.
- Assist with patient flow by preparing exam rooms, gathering necessary patient information, and ensuring the physician has all relevant details before the exam.
- Provide clerical support such as printing prescriptions, patient education materials, and referral documents.
- Communicate effectively with technicians, front desk staff, and physicians to maintain smooth clinic operations.
- Maintain confidentiality of patient records in compliance with HIPAA regulations.
- Stay up to date with EHR system updates, medical documentation guidelines, and ophthalmic terminology.
- Identify and report any discrepancies or errors in documentation to the physician for clarification and correction.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in healthcare administration or related field preferred.
- 1 year of experience as an ophthalmic or optometric technician or scribe preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to follow precise protocols.
- Flexibility and willingness to travel between multiple locations as needed.
- Ability to work independently while effectively collaborating with the healthcare team.
- Exceptional organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENT:
- Exerting up to twenty-five pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
- Repetitive motion. Substantial movements (motions) of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers.
- Have close visual acuity to perform an activity including viewing a computer terminal, extensive reading, interpretation, etc.
- Must possess the physical, mental, and cognitive skills needed to complete essential tasks, including abilities such as learning, remembering, focusing, categorizing, and integrating information for comprehension, problem-solving, and timely decision-making.
- Must be able to be stationary for prolonged periods of time
