About This Position
POSITION TITLE. Lab Biosafety Manager
RESPONSIBILITIES.
Support the Biosafety Training program by providing biosafety training to staff at various levelsSupport the Select Agent Program through audits/reviews of Select Agent records, plans, and laboratory inventoriesPerform laboratory safety surveys for BSL-2, BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratoriesPre-reviewing recombinant nucleic acid and biological pathogen registrations to ensure administrative and technical completeness and compliance with the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant and Synthetic Nucleic Acids (NIH Guidelines) and other NIH or federal policiesPerform risk assessments of new procedures and new equipment for BSL-3 and BSL-4 laboratoriesDevelop new SOPs/plans and review and update existing SOPs/plansReview animal study proposals for compliance with safety and biosafety guidelines/ regulationsInspect BSL-4 critical containment and life support systemsProvide biosafety support for COVID-19 response activitiesParticipate in facility design review for new lab construction and renovation projectsPerform lab and equipment decontamination and validation proceduresRespond to facility incidents and alarms and conduct timely risk assessments

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSE, PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OR OTHER
EXPERTISE REQUIRED.
Master’s degree in a related field. Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a BA/BS degree is equivalent to a Master’s degree. Minimum of one (1) year experience in related field. Must be able to pass FBI Security Risk Assessment (SRA) and be registered to work with Select Agents Must be able to obtain a Tier 3 background investigation Must be enrolled in the NIH Biological Surety Program and maintain status through the personal reliability program Knowledge of BSL3 and BSL4 safety practices and procedures Knowledge on how to perform a risk assessment process for high consequence pathogensStrong understanding of OSHA, CDC and USDA regulations as well as NIH recombinant DNA guidelinesStrong communications skills, both oral and written.Excellent organizational and time management skills.
WORKING CONDITIONS.
Work is to be performed in an office environment.Employee will also need to enter biomedical research laboratories to include Biosafety Level 2, 3 and 4 laboratories. Employee will be required to wear all personal protective equipment and take safety precautions to mitigate risk of exposures.Standard work schedule is up to 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, excluding Federal holidays.Government-furnished workspace, equipment, and systems will be provided as required.Position supports unclassified work and requires compliance with all applicable security and data protection requirements.Position is eligible for training, travel and relocation expenses.
